Promoting Healthy Living

Health Education - Secondary Schools

The club has also developed a Healthy Living Day for secondary students.

The day covers healthy eating and the importance of exercise and also involves Karl Marginson cooking a healthy meal with the young people.

We have delivered the session to a Princes Trust XL Club based at Stockport Pupil Referral Unit. The day was a great success and we hope to run many more sessions like this for this age group.

We are also developing ways of training young people to be health educators using the packages and materials we have developed and putting on healthy living weeks in their local primary schools with support from our coaches.

Training young people to be health trainers is the most effective way of making sure that the health messages we are trying to communicate are really understood. We also hope to inspire young people to follow the example of our club and get involved in their communities.

Health Education – Youth Projects

The club was very pleased to be commissioned by Bury Council to deliver a Communities4Health project encouraging young people to take part in sport on a regular basis.

Working closely with Bury Youth Workers, FC United coaches have been working in parks across Bury developing street football projects where youngsters of different ages play football together, get some good quality training and develop a habit of getting regular physical exercise.

In a survey at the start of the project, young people told our community team that they like to take part in sport but not enough of their friends wanted to in order to make a kick-about viable. This project aims to give those youngsters that do want to play sport a bit of support to prise their mates away from the playstation and onto the parks.

Having played together for several weeks, the youngsters are now talking about forming a team and arranging mini-tournaments. We plan to make mini tournaments run by teenagers for teenagers a regular part of the pre-match culture at Gigg Lane this season.

If you are from a school or organisation which you feel could benefit from involvement in one of our healthy living projects please contact robinpye@fc-utd.co.uk.
