Big Coat Day Donations
12 January 2010

FC United of Manchester is still appealing for donations of spare winter clothing as part of its “Big Coat Day” collection for the city’s homeless.

The club’s game on New Year’s Day – when the main collection was to have taken place – was postponed due to the snow and freezing weather.

And that makes it all the more important to donate warm clothing, said general manager Andy Walsh.

“Despite the game being called off on New Year’s Day, we still had two tons of winter clothing dropped off at Gigg Lane. But we hope there are lots more people out there who still intend to donate spare coats, hats, gloves and scarves,” said Andy.

“The cold weather is sticking around so we really do want to collect as much as possible for the city’s homeless and needy.”

A further collection will be held this Saturday (January 16) on the forecourt at Bury FC, Gigg Lane, where FC United groundshare. The collection will take place whether the scheduled game v Bradford Park Avenue goes ahead or not, with the clothing handed over to the Salvation Army, Boaz Trust and the Mustard Tree.

Anyone wishing to make a donation but cannot attend Gigg Lane on Saturday can leave it at one of two venues in Manchester: FC United’s office at Hope Mill on Pollard Street in Ancoats; or the Mustard Tree’s office at 110 Oldham Road, Manchester between 9am and 5pm from January 11th to January 15th.

Andy added: “It was a magnificent response on New Year’s Day. So many people struggled through the snow and ice to bring their donations, including supporters, members of the public, several MPs, religious groups, schools and community centres. Jobcentreplus staff brought 40 sacks of clothing!

“We hope to at least double this amount through our further collections at Gigg Lane and the drop-off points in the city centre.”

The collection has won the backing of numerous actors including John Henshaw, Justin Moorhouse, James Nesbitt and Carly Stenson.

MPs Ivan Lewis and John Leech brought along donations on New Year’s Day, as did Bury North Parliamentary candidate Maryam Khan, while Manchester City Council leader Sir Richard Leese is helping publicise the collection.

And former Manchester United player Lee Sharpe has also pledged his support.

FC United v Bradford Park Avenue: January 16th 2010, kick off 3pm at Gigg Lane football ground, Bury.
