FC United Aiming for FA Cup First Round on Sunday
20 October 2010

FC United of Manchester is to try for the second time in its five year history to secure a place in the first round proper of the FA Cup.

The club, formed five years ago by Manchester United fans in the wake of the Glazer takeover, was knocked out of the FA Cup this time last year in the fourth and final qualifying round, in a 3-0 defeat at Northwich Victoria.

On Sunday FC United will face Blue Square Premier opponents Barrow AFC in a bid to reach the first round proper and potentially a dream tie against a league club.

The game will be played at Gigg Lane at 3pm. And the timing down to Bury FC playing at home on the Saturday means the teams will kick off knowing the opponent that awaits the victors.

The draw for the first round proper is being made a couple of hours before the game starts and supporters are likely to arrive early in numbers to see who is pulled out of the hat.

Although theyre the underdogs, two divisions below Barrow, FC United will go into the tie full of confidence after scoring 14 goals in their last three games - having won in the league, the FA Cup and the FA Trophy.

FC United fans are expected to crowd into the Manchester Road End and Main Stand of Gigg Lane with flags, banners and songs to create a classic Cup tie atmosphere. Barrow fans will be in the Cemetery End.

And a win on Sunday would boost FC United off the pitch too, as it works towards raising funds and investment to build its own ground in Newton Heath the original birthplace of Manchester United.

Despite not yet having a home of its own, FC United is unique at its level of English football in having its obligations to its fan communities and local communities written into its Club Objects. The club was awarded Cooperative UKs Cooperative Excellence Award in 2009 for its cutting edge work with local communities.

Admission on Sunday is pay on the gate: ?8 for adults, ?2 for U18s and ?5 for Over 60s.
