Match Report
Sparks flew on Bonfire Night as FC United had two players sent off and were knocked out of the FA Carlsberg Trophy 2-1 at Witton Albion with a sweet Daniel Andrews strike finally settling the tie at the fifth attempt.

Michael Norton and Lee Neville were both dismissed but the nine Reds who didn’t lose their heads nearly pulled off an unlikely draw when substitute Tom Greaves cancelled out Neville Thompson’s first half opener with 20 minutes to go.

Karl Marginson’s side had chances to win the contest and were looking a good bet to at least hold on for a penalty shoot-out but Andrews punished United’s lack of discipline with three minutes remaining by curling the winner into the top corner, beyond goalkeeper Jon Worsnop.

Following the original 2-2 draw two weeks ago, two postponed and one abandoned replay, FC United agreed to forfeit home advantage and replay the game at Witton’s Wincham Park. The Reds, playing in blue, started brightly and could easily have taken the lead but Matthew Wolfenden slipped as he had a clear sight on goal and his shot trickled wide of the post.

Moments later, Josh Hancock served up a warning for United by curling a free-kick against the crossbar. Shortly afterwards, Thompson broke the deadlock in the 17th minute by turning home a right-wing cross by Andrews from close range.

Just before the half hour mark, things went from bad to worse for United as Norton was shown a straight red card for violent conduct when he unnecessarily stuck his head towards an opponents’ in a brief melee after a tackle by Dave Birch.

And if the task of getting back into the tie wasn’t going to be tough enough, Neville received his second yellow card 10 minutes into the second half for a lunging tackle.

Surprisingly though, despite the numerical disadvantage, it was United who looked like the most dangerous side for large spells of the second half. In particularly, Astley Mulholland seemed to revel in the ‘backs against the wall’ situation and took the opportunity to show off his pace and dribbling finesse by driving the Reds forward at every given moment.

With 70 minutes on the clock, United got a deserved equaliser when substitute Greaves wriggled free of Albion defender Ben Harrison and raced clear to the edge of the box before side-footing the ball past Matthew Cooper, who got his hands to the striker’s shot but couldn’t do enough to keep it out.

The nine men from Manchester continued to press and Cooper had to produce two good saves from Greaves to keep the scores level as Albion appeared to be taken aback by the work-rate and sheer cheek of the depleted Reds, who seemed to think they could snatch a win.

But just when it looked like United were going to pull off an extraordinary result, Witton tucked home an almost inevitable late winner to advance through to face Leek Town in the next round of the competition.

Website man of the match: Astley Mulholland. Drove United forward and refused to throw the towel in when we went down to nine men.
