Match Report
FC United remain top of the Evo-Stik Premier Division after a 2-1 victory at Grantham Town on Saturday afternoon with goals from Greg Daniels and Chris Lynch.

The victory was very hard fought in a swirling wind that caused problems for both teams. The Gingerbreads had the first chance when Ben Saunders played Liam Read in behind the FC defence, his shot pushed wide by Dave Carnell.

Playing against the wind, FC United found it difficult to get any fluid football going and it took to the 34th minute for the first chance, Matthew Wolfenden shooting at Jake Turner.

Five minutes later, the Reds took the lead. Shelton Payne found space on the left, his cross wasn’t cleared by the home defence leaving Daniels a simple tap in.

The second half started in a similar vein though Daniels almost doubled the lead but his shot hit the bar. A minute later, the lead was almost lost when Lewis Lacy dawdled on the ball out wide. Read found himself in the box but lacked composure and fired over.

On 75 minutes, the home side thought they had won a penalty when Reid fell in the box, the referee correctly waving away the appeals, the striker had lost the ball and stumbled.

With nine minutes on the clock, the lead was doubled, substitute Chris Lynch heading home a corner. Grantham pulled a goal back on 86 minutes when Read pounced on indecision in the FC United defence to round Carnell and roll the ball home.

The Reds had a great chance to extend the lead at the death, Matthew Kay saw a shot saved, Tom Greaves rolled the ball back into the box, Kay missed his kick and Daniels fired over.

The character shown by FC United in the game will stand the players in good stead for the rest of the season, especially with a tough game at Rushall coming up.

Website man of the match - Luke Ashworth. A great defensive performance especially with the conditions and tough approach from the home side.
