Match Report
FC United ran out 4-0 winners at the Turnbull Ground against Whitby Town on Saturday afternoon, just as they did on April Fools’ Day en route to the Northern Premier Division title.

A Matthew Wolfenden brace, a first goal in 10 months by veteran striker Michael Norton, and a fourth from Craig Lindfield gave the Reds a comfortable victory over the North Yorkshire club.

Wolfenden broke the deadlock after five minutes and it looked like a goal-fest might be on its way. But it was the hosts who looked the most likely to get on the scoresheet during the rest of the first half.

Goalkeeper Dave Carnell had to be on guard to tip a wayward strike by captain Liam Brownhill over the bar, thereby preventing an own goal and keeping United in the lead.

Wolfenden doubled the advantage just before the hour mark with a good finish and 18 minutes later, Norton finally blew away the post injury cobwebs by heading home a confidence boosting goal.

Moments later, Lindfield, who was playing his first game of the pre-season, whipped in a trademark cross-cum-shot from the flank. The winger’s dangerous ball deceived everyone and found its way into the net for 4-0. If no-one else fancies getting on the end of it, Lindfield is perfectly capable of doing it himself.

It was another good run out for FC United and good to see the team scoring freely as the opening match of the season against Gloucester is now just two weeks away.
