Match Report
FC United’s women emulated the men by recording their second consecutive home league win in as many weekends despatching Liverpool City Ladies Community FC 7-1 last Sunday. Olivia Gannon set the Red’s on their way with a third minute opener, the 400th competitive goal in just over three and half seasons for FC’s Women, but, a hatful of further chances were spurned throughout the first 45 minutes and on the stroke of halftime Liverpool equalised through Michelle Lee.

Lee Sutton shook things up at half time and United switched on from the restart scoring a further six goals without reply with strikes from Beth Tattersall, Shellby Wolstencroft a Kirsty Chambers brace, a second for Gannon and an unfortunate own goal.

Following a 20 minute delay to kick off due to the opposition’s striking, all purple kit being delayed in transit, the game finally started in dismal, cold, wet weather conditions that persisted throughout. United threatened to lift the gloom from the off as Jess McCarrick attacked down the left releasing Tattersall creating a half chance for Gannon inside the first minute. Gannon was not to be denied and on three minutes Wolstencroft released Charlie Evans down the right who in turn played the ball forward to Adora Yau who delivered a superb cross for Gannon to place her shot past the advancing keeper to open the scoring.

The rest of the half was a story of wasted opportunities and spurned chances by the Reds with Liverpool effective in compressing much of the play in the middle of the pitch without creating too much themselves. However, all that changed on the stroke of half time, as Michelle Lee broke between the FC centre halves and lofted her shot over the on rushing Mary Priestner to level the scores at the break.

Within two minutes of the restart Tattersall restored United’s lead after good build up through Chambers and Wolstencroft. Clever play through midfield saw Wolstencroft break the offside trap playing the ball through to Chambers who rounded Sam Marsh in the Liverpool goal and in almost slow motion, walked the ball over the line to provide United with a two goal cushion on 54 minutes.

Two minutes later and Chambers floated in a free kick from the right and as challenges rose in the congested Liverpool penalty area the ball deflected off a defender’s head, wrong footing Marsh and nestling in the bottom corner of her goal.

As the game threatened to fizzle out, three goals in a frenetic four minute spell inside the final ten minutes gave the Reds a comfortable 7-1 victory and a scoreline that more accurately reflected their overall ambition and dominance against resilient opposition. Chambers blasted her second of the afternoon as she unleashed a fierce dipping drive from the left hand angle of the penalty area over and across Marsh into the far top corner on 82 minutes.

A minute later Chambers worked a one-two with Leah Hartshorne, crossing low and dangerously along the six yard line for Gannon to tap home her second of the game from close range at the far post. Wolstencroft’s skilful, persistent contribution all afternoon was rewarded with the game’s final goal four minutes from time as she picked up the ball midway inside the Liverpool half jinking her way to the edge of the area before firing over Marsh from 18 yards.

The Reds are away to Bolton Wanderers in the Argyle Cup second round this weekend and away to Liverpool Marshall Feds Reserves in the league on Valentine’s Day. They return to action at Broadhurst on 21 February when United host Mersey Girls in the league. Get yourself to those football grounds.
