FC United kick-start season by drawing at Southport on Tuesday night
FC United got a point on the board at the fourth attempt as they drew 3-3 at Southport on Tuesday night but they were left wondering what might have been after being 3-1 up with just four minutes to go.

James Hooper got the Reds off to the perfect start on eight minutes with a deflected goal and Nathan Lowe doubled the lead with a great strike from the edge of the box 12 minutes before halftime.

Liam Martin pulled one back for the hosts just after the hour but United looked to have put the result to bed with under 20 minutes to go when Craig Lindfield squeezed in a third goal at the near post.

However, the Sandgrounders, who were relegated from the National League last season showed their fighting spirit to snatch a share of the spoils. Adam Dugdale fired home a vital second goal three minutes before time before Jack Sampson’s stoppage time equaliser meant FC United had to settle for a point.

Both sides started brightly but it was the Reds who broke the deadlock when a Jason Gilchrist cross was only cleared to Hooper at the edge of the box. His shot was deflected past Iain Turner by Connor McCarthy. Both Hooper and McCarthy may want to claim the goal but regardless of the scorer, it was definitely a goal for FC United.

Southport were seeing quite a bit of the ball but only fired shots straight at Lloyd Allinson in the FC goal. The lead was almost doubled when a header by debutant Michael Connor flew just past the far post.

The score line did become 2-0 on 33 minutes when a good move saw Joel Senior play a ball to Lowe who side-footed the ball past Turner.

The Merseyside side did took more of a hold of the game in the second half and the lead was halved when Liam Martin rolled the ball past Allinson inside the far post.

The game seemed to be won on 72 minutes when McCarthy crossed the ball into the box where it was turned in by Lindfield. But, with just three minutes left on the clock, Adam Dugdale managed to bundle the ball into the net to reduce the arrears.

The officials then signalled five minutes of stoppage time and with two of these minutes played, the home side equalised when a cross to the far post was emphatically headed home by Sampson to break FC United hearts.

The performance was a vast improvement on the previous matches and bodes well for the forthcoming visit to Bradford Park Avenue.
Website man of the match - Scott Kay. Showed exactly why had been missing for FC in the first three matches.
