Match Report

Two goals in a mad two minutes condemned FC United to a 3-0 defeat at FA Vase holders South Shields.

The home side started well with Carl Finnigan shooting twice at Adriano Basso, in the side for the injured Lloyd Allinson. The Reds did start to get a hold in the game, Richie Baker heading at Liam Connell and then seeing a free kick hit the top of the bar just after the half hour mark.

As seen many times in the past, FC seemed to start the second half still in the changing rooms as The Mariners took a quick two goal lead. A move on the right saw Gavin Cogdon in the box and he blasted a shot last Basso. Two minutes, later it was Cogdon again as FC lost the ball in the middle of the pitch, Cogdon picked up the ball about 20 yards out and curled a shot round Basso and into the bottom corner.

This prompted the usual pre-season changes as a number of players were exchanged. One of these substitutes, Ben McKenna was a high point of the second half with his direct running at the fullback.

The home side continued to test Basso with substitutes Luke Sullivan and Andrew Stephenson both bringing good saves from the keeper. On 78 minutes, the lead was increased when FC United switched off at a free-kick, the ball was pulled back to Finnigan who side-footed home. A couple of minutes later, FC United’s day took another bad turn as Basso had to leave the field with a head injury being replaced by Matty Hughes between the sticks.

The visitors did have a couple of chances late on, McKenna chipping wide and Jake Williams heading wide. FC United did have some good moments of football, especially in the first half but the game may well give manager Karl Marginson more questions than answers, especially concerning the lack of clear scoring opportunities.

Man of the match - Nathan Lowe. Lowe stood out, especially in the first half with some good passing, touches and winning of the ball. Special mention also to Ben McKenna for his bright second half performance on the left wing.
