FC United through to face Stockport after hitting Handsworth for six in FA Cup
FC United moved through to the third qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup with a comprehensive 6-2 victory over Handsworth Parramore and sealed a mouthwatering tie away to Stockport County a week on Saturday.

The Reds should have seen off this tie at the first attempt at weekend. But the 89th minute equaliser that forced tonight’s replay left no lasting effects on the men in red as they raced out of the blocks and found themselves a goal up after just three minutes.

Connor McCarthy drove straight at the heart of the visiting defence and after cutting through them saw his effort saved by the legs of Handsworth keeper Chris Butt. The ball was then pumped back into the box and Michael Connor fired home to ease any nerves.

After 15 minutes the Reds found themselves two goals to the good as Jason Gilchrist’s low drive from outside the box beat Butt. Connor McCarthy grabbed his first on the night just two minutes later, powerfully finishing a deflected cross at the far post for 3-0.

The energy and tempo put into the first tie on Saturday by our visitors clearly had an effect on them tonight and there just wasn’t enough in the tank for them to show the same fighting spirit that had earned them a draw at weekend.

Craig Lindfield went down with what looked like a hamstring problem just after half an hour but his replacement Joel Logan grabbed his opportunity with both hands, firing in FC’s fourth of the game just four minutes after replacing Lindfield.

With the tie beyond doubt the second half began at a much slower tempo and in fact it was the visitors from South Yorkshire who began the half with much more zip than we had seen in the first.

But FC soon got back in control of the game and McCarthy showed great composure as he finished well to make the score 5-0. The striker scored his second of the contest just past the hour mark.

The visitors then grabbed a couple of goals. The first was a well taken volley from a corner by Oscar Radford and then Saturday’s goal scoring hero Pat Lindley got in on the act to make it 5-2 with just over 10 minutes remaining.

But even the faintest hopes of a comeback were soon crushed as McCarthy netted his hat-trick with five minutes left. After a good run, it looked like the chance might have gone but McCarthy managed to pull it back onto his right foot and fire home.

The win will bring some confidence back to the team as we welcome Tamworth to Broadhurst Park on Sunday. The Reds are looking to end a run of four consecutive defeats in the league and dare we say the team may even have one eye on what will undoubtedly be a cracker of a cup tie at Edgeley Park the following weekend.

Website man of the match: Connor McCarthy. The hat-trick hero has to take the honours, but the award is for more than scoring three goals. His direct driving run in the opening minutes set up the first goal and the tone for the game and his work rate didn’t drop for the full 90 minutes.
