United pay the penalty in cup defeat
FC United’s dream of FA Cup glory was ended with a 2-1 defeat at Fleetwood Town in front of 3,112 supporters, but the Reds did themselves proud as they took the game to the UniBond Premier outfit and were unlucky to suffer the loss.

Karl Marginson’s men were clearly not afraid of the side sitting in the top five in the division above, getting at the them right from the off and the Fishermen needed two penalties to edge into the Second Qualifying Round.

There was controversy at the Highbury stadium before a ball was even kicked in the game. Twice before kick off, Sam Ashton was struck by a plastic bottle thrown from behind the goal where an idiotic minority posing as Fleetwood fans were intent on causing trouble. The second incident forced the referee Andy Pownall to take the players off the field for 10 minutes.

Once things had calmed down the players returned and the game finally got going. It was FC United who were the first to settle and were close from taking the lead after just five minutes. A corner from the left by Jerome Wright found David Chadwick unmarked in the box and you would have put money on the United skipper opening the scoring but his effort went just wide.

Despite early United pressure, Fleetwood were awarded a penalty 18 minutes into the game. Chadwick was adjudged to have fouled Phil Denney just inside the 18-yard box. Jaime Milligan stepped up and despite Sam Ashton guessing the right way, he just couldn’t get a hand on a well struck penalty.

To their credit, United soon responded. Rory Patterson showed great acceleration to run onto Wright’s long ball, Patterson ran into the box and coolly slotted past the Fleetwood keeper Danny Hurst.

United, tail up, were pushing for the second. Nugent, spotting Hurst off his line, tried his luck from 30 yards but the Fleetwood keeper just got back in time to collect the goal bound effort.

Little than 14 minutes into the second half Fleetwood were down to 10 men. Richie Allen was sent off after raising his hands to the face of Wright in an off the ball incident. But despite the dismissal Fleetwood regained the lead on 65 minutes through another penalty. This time Rob Nugent fouled Phil Denney from behind and Andy Pownall pointed to the spot with no hesitation. Milligan stepped up again for his and, more importantly, Fleetwood’s second.

United pushed for an equaliser but Fleetwood were resilient enough to see out the victory and end FC United’s campaign in the famous cup.
