Match Report
FC United U18s 5-2 Marine ‘A’ U18s

After the Youth Team’s Caretaker Manager Darren Lyons returned to his Player Development role, perhaps wanting to keep his 100% record intact, the baton was passed to last seasons Assistant and now this years Manager; Andy Whiteman. He didn’t disappoint the watching hordes as Marine were put to the sword 5-2.

Marine, who were beaten by FC in the league play-off semi-final last season; their only blemish in an otherwise 100% season long record, were out for revenge and started brightly. They fashioned the first real chance in the fifth minute when John Connolly headed on a free kick to bring a sharp save from FC keeper Joe Grantham.

The reds competed well and got up a head of steam in the 27th minute when a Ryan Lyons long throw broke for Roshgar Mousa to fire home from near the penalty spot. Another sharp save by Grantham prevented Marine from registering a quick reply before FC had a more formal attempt from the penalty spot after Marine were judged to have pushed Roshgar in the area. Unfortunately Andy Lee was unable to repeat last week’s success with his shot comfortably saved by Tony Fanning.

Marine were level in the 37th minute when Gary Jones was able to get past the FC back four and neatly chip the keeper. Andy Lee however, restored the lead soon after when he pounced on the rebound from the keeper saving a fiercely struck free kick from Josh Burke.

With that and a half time lecture from their coaching staff, Marine made a bright start to the second half and were unlucky not to equalise when Kalumbu Mwandwe had a good chance from a corner but fired over the bar.

FC picked up the pace and after 55 minutes extended their lead when with the help of Roshgar, another long throw caused confusion in the Marine defence and Jake Haslam fired home. After this the home side generally controlled the game and it was slightly against the run of play that Marine pulled a goal back. A corner was fumbled by Joe and as is the nature of a goal keepers mistake Kalumbu Mwandwe was on home to score from half a yard.

This made the game a little more tense than it perhaps should have been, although in true Manchester versus Merseyside fashion the reds made the most of an injury time period that ran to seven minutes; mostly due to an injury to Andy Graham who could be out for six weeks, by scoring two goals to give the home side a slightly flattering but deserved win. Three minutes into injury time, Jake received a throw-in on the left wing, casually turned his man and crossed to substitute Ibukun Modupe-Ojo. He gracefully sidestepped to create space and fired home.

There was still time for very late substitute Luke Kolakowski to punish hesitation in the Marine defence as the ball bounced around the box and make it 5-2.
