Match Report
FC United Youth visited Salford City today and came away with a 2-2 draw, although that feels more like two points dropped than one gained as a two goal lead was allowed to slip during an action packed second half. The first half was one tale of half chances and missed opportunities as the reds were frustrated by two tall central defenders and a man of the first half of the match performance by Salford’s Alex Kemp in midfield. Salford came closest to scoring when a shot from Jack Burke found its way through a crowded penalty area and clipped the outside of the post, although all the FC forward line could have contributed to a what would have been a deserved half time lead.

During the half time team talk the lads were shown why it was going wrong and responded perfectly, going ahead in the 48th minute. A neat ball from Carl Fitton down the left wing gave Stephanos Ioannou the freedom to expose a lack of pace in the Salford full back pairing. His run to the byline and cross was finished by Dylan Moloney at the near post. The visitors looked top storm off into the distance as there were two good chances to add to the lead in the next five minutes.
The reds didn’t have it all their own way and in an early warning of what was to come; Salford, having made changes of their own which included the substitution of Kemp, forced an acrobatic save from Joe Grantham as he turned an effort from Ben Berrisford over the bar.

More chances came and went as a greater level of composure would surely have seen FC add to their lead earlier than they did. Salford may however be less than delighted with the second goal when it did arrive in the 71st minute. Dylan had beaten the right back and was looking to take advantage but let the ball get away from him. The defence conceded a corner when a clearance up field seemed the easier option. Carl Fitton’s corner was headed out of the area only to be retrieved by Gage Eme and returned with interest from 25 yards.

With the game seemingly in the away sides grasp a few minutes concentration would surely have done the trick. Unfortunately Salford were quickly level as first a deflected shot found its way into the goal and what appeared to be another spectacular tip over, when Saheel Abdullah tried to lob Grantham, was not quite enough and the ball dropped under the cross bar.
FC United tried to restore the lead as the game drew to a close and had some half chances, but in truth it was probably Salford who came closest with several penalty area scrambles with Jordan Dainty and Ferre Edwards repelling all comers aided by late substitute Ryan Lyons and debutant Davison Banda who had replaced an injured Andy Graham in the first half.
