Match Report
Staly Bridged By FC Youth

The FC United Youth Team brought their league season to a winning conclusion against Stalybridge Celtic with a 2-1 win at the Wright Robinson Sports College. After an embarrassing defeat in the home fixture the reds were keen to turn it around and were quickest out of the blocks. At least half a dozen chances came and went including a Gage Eme free kick from at least 35 yards. The best of all came midway through the first half when a sweeping move started by Jake Haslam saw a shot by Gage Eme fly across the goal and just wide. Dylan Moloney strained to get a foot to it at the far post but just failed.

Unfortunately it is often the case that such profligacy is eventually punished at the other end. This game was no different as soon afterwards Stalybridge broke up the left wing and a cross was turned in by Joe Heap in what was their first chance of the game. Touchline thoughts turned to the game at St Bride’s and feared a repeat score line, but this was not the same ruthlessly efficient Stalybridge and the red shirted heroes refused to crumble. Indeed two home cautions for dissent were the only further entries to the referees’ notebook as FC pressed for an equaliser. Scott Cheetham was particularly effective in midfield and created chances for Dylan and Stephanos Ioannou to go close.

The second half action was shared a little more evenly as Stalybridge had some good early chances, including hitting the post with a free kick that was allowed to drift across the goal. FC fought to regain the initiative and had a couple of good chances before the equaliser finally arrived. This came when Dylan was able to get down the left wing and reach the goal line. His cross reached Gage who fired home from around 12 yards. The winning goal came little more than five minutes later with the move of the match. A clearance by Joe Grantham reached Stephanos who controlled it superbly and fed Gage on the left. His pull back found its way to Josh Burke who was last man, he cotrolled the ball and cut back inside to fire home.

Stalybridge tried for an equaliser and had a good chance with a free kick on the edge of the FC box in a central position. Joe Heap fortunately was unable to hit the target. FC battled manfully, with Ferre Edwards and Jordan Dainty inspirational in keeping the home side out and were ably assisted by the full backs and midfield. In truth from then on FC were the only likely scorers and could with more luck and composure got a lot closer to matching the reverse score line, but that would probably be asking too much against the team that will actually finish second in the league, behind Altrincham.

All that remains is for the team to repeat the display next week in the County Cup Final and take the form in to next season and surely more will be given the chance to step up to the first team. This may have been a season of mixed performances but they have shown that at their best they are a match for anybody.
Thanks Lads.
