Match Report
Curzon are “All Pie’d Out.???

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, a game which had been rescheduled more times than a Frank Sinatra retirement tour, was played between Curzon Ashton and FC United Youth. Regular readers of the official site could be forgiven for arriving at 2:30 or not arriving at all. The game actually started at 2:00 and ended in a 4-0 win for the reds, in a performance as good as anything seen this season.

Urged from the dressing room to show their ability and demonstrate that they like other teams could win games and score late goals through simple determination to be the better side; FC leapt out of the blocks and could have been four up in the first ten minutes. Roshgar Mousa and Gage Eme both found themselves in good striking positions but unable to find the net. Davison Banda and Carl Fitton also came close with half chances.

The first goal came in the 20th minute and had an element of fortune to it. Andy Graham fed Davison don the right wing and he cut in and shot but miscued slightly, the ball flew beyond the far post and was returned by Jake Haslam, with what he will no doubt claim was the assured touch of a Bolo Zenden but looked like another mishit from the sidelines. Either way it found the net.
The lead was almost doubled two minutes later as an FC corner led to a goalmouth scramble. From the half way line it was impossible to understand how they hadn’t scored, but 1-0 it stayed. Other chances came and went, including possibly the only Curzon chance of the half when a shot narrowly cleared the bar.

The half time break saw Dylan Moloney come on for Roshgar and the game continue in the same manner. After 5 minutes Gage chased a ball through the middle and managed to get to the ball before the keeper, his touch did however take him a little too wide and his shot/cross drifted over the bar. Gage started the next chance when a throw in went to Dylan and on to Carl Fitton who just shot over the bar.
Dylan and Carl combined to make it 2-0 on the hour mark, when Dylan found himself with time and space 25 yards out, urged to shoot by the bench he did so but his effort was blocked and looped into the path of Carl Fitton who made no mistake.

Four minutes later Gage had perhaps his best chance, hitting the bar after running on to a defence splitting diagonal ball from Davison Banda as FC pressed forward relentlessly. The only surprise was that it took until the 80th minute to add to the score. A free kick near the goal line wide on the right was driven in low and hard by Scott Cheetham and was turned into his own net by Nathan Martin.

It was only at this point that Curzon began to threaten the FC goal, perhaps urged from the bench to salvage some pride, they had a number of good attacks and Craig Gommersall drew a top quality save from debut keeper Thomas Siwka. The reds however displayed another trait of top quality sides in that they gave everything to ensure they kept a clean sheet.

Then in injury time they got the luck that so many sides get for playing at full pace for the whole game when Gage played a ball forward that Andy Graham chased down the right wing. His cross was met with a sweet first time drive into the top corner by Scott Cheetham.
The game finished 4-0 and my apologies to those not name checked who only got on with their jobs quietly and to the best of their ability. The only disappointment was that the score was not much higher, but that was perhaps asking a little bit too much.
