Match Report
As the first team said adieu to La Stade de Gigg at the end of a long season, so the youth bade a fond farewell to St Brides. The differences being that the youth team haven’t finished their season yet; and were unable to leave on a high note with a victory. A Late Altrincham free kick, headed home by Ryan Marsden put the brakies on an FC fight back. Not sure Gigg Lane will be in demand for cricket either but that is another story.

The reds, or in this case blues, as this league requires the home team to change in the event of a colour clash, were keen to avenge a 3-0 defeat in the earlier game. A more combative performance ensued and chances were few and far between. The first real chance didn’t come until the 20th minute when an Altrincham attack flashed across the FC box, Joe Grantham raced along his line towards the corner of the penalty box, thinking he could snuff out the attack but without success as the ball was returned across the goal and only narrowly went beyond the far post.

This was to be only a temporary reprieve as three minutes later Altrincham were awarded a free kick on the edge of the FC penalty area which was lashed into the top corner of the net. Three minutes after that an FC free kick in a similar position saw Josh Burke fire narrowly over the bar and on the half hour mark Jake Haslam struck the outside of the post with a diving header from a Carl Fitton cross.
That was the last of the chances although an FC break saw Gage Eme chase a ball coming over his shoulder. Although James Fosdyke in the Altrincham goal narrowly won the race for possession he came off second best as the pair accidentally collided and was immediately substituted.

In the second half FC saw more of the ball as they tried to pass through the Altrincham defence rather than push long balls up for the forward pairing of Gage Eme and Stephanos Ioannou to chase against a tall centre back pairing and a man of the match display by right back Ben Shawcross. This seemed to be paying dividends in that they created some half chances, strange then that it was a long ball headed on by Gage that got past the defence and allowed Stephpanos to run on and lob the goalkeeper and equalise.
That however served as a wake-up call for Altrincham who ensured that for all their effort, FC didn’t get another clear sight of goal. The visitors though were equally shot shy, despite having a Centre Forward in Glodi Kuba-Kuba who battled manfully in receiving the ball and trying to hold it and set up players breaking past him. That was until the 84th minute and with a free kick needlessly conceded near the corner flag, the Altrincham defenders combined to take the kick and head home at the far post to win the game.

It was a keenly contested game yet the only card shown was after the final whistle when an Altrincham player saw red for dissent.
