FC United Youth 2-0 Salford

As the calendar clicked on to May and thoughts of summer sports, the temperature dial decided to head downwards. FC United returned to Boothstown to play their home league game against Salford in conditions more like winter than spring. However not even a late call up for Thomas Siwka as he and Joe Grantham compared injuries could halt FC’s progress to a 2-0 win.

Early exchanges were evenly shared as both sides had two corners in the first 10 minutes although neither seriously threatened to score. The first real chance came for FC when having forced a corner through a neat exchange between Ryan Lyons Stephanos Ioannou and Scott Cheetham forced a corner. Dylan Moloney back headed the cross along the goal line but saw it cleared at the far post.

Salford probably should have taken the lead mid way through the half when a mazy run by Beresford set Abdullah clear on goal. He was unlucky to see his shot hit the post and be cleared. The reds, playing into a strong wind in the first half were guilty of trying to hit the ball forward too quickly and were only able to create half chances until the 34th minute. Carl Fitton was put clear down the wing and crossed into the box, Salford smuggled the ball away but only as far as Jake Haslem, who found Scott Cheetham on the edge of the Salford box. His shot flew into the roof of the net as Salford keeper Dorsey seemed rooted to the spot.

Salford had an almost immediate chance to equalise as they won a free kick on the left corner of the penalty area, Lee was unlucky to see his shot drift beyond the far post. Carl Fitton was narrowly wide after a link between Adam Berrisford and Stephanos gave him space in the box a minute before the break; yet there was still time for Salford to threaten as Thomas raced to the edge of his area to deal with a ball which could have been left to the back four. His punch was returned by Salford who hit the top of the bar with an instant return.

The second half saw FC United take charge of the game as they answered a call to trust their ability and play a more patient passing game and early changes saw Luke Kolakowski on for Josh Burke and Gage Eme on for Dylan. The only surprise was that there was only one more goal to show for their effort, although it was possibly the move of the match to create the chance. A run by Jake through the Salford midfield was moved on to Scott who crossed for Stephanos. His shot curled beyond the goalkeeper and nestled in the far corner in the 68th minute. Gage should probably have scored when he and Stephanos broke beyond the Salford back line. Scott did have the ball in the net late on when he followed up an Andy Graham shot that the keeper could only parry. Sadly he was ruled to have been offside when the original shot came in and the game finished 2-0 to FC United.
