Match Report
As the calendar ticked around to September and St Brides the cricket pitch gave way to St Brides the football pitch, the FC United Youth team gathered in the early evening to take on the Youngsters of Nantwich Town. There were plenty of old faces and some new ones all keen to stake their claim to a place in the FC record books. As the sun of early evening gave way to twilight and beyond the reds departed 4-1 winners and some new faces had made their claim already.

Jay Walcott scored twice, once with either foot and Ryan Westwood opened his account. Matthew Tierney and Harrison Reeve continued the impressive form that has already seen them given games with the first team in pre season and offers of dual registration loans to Atherton Laburnum Rovers. Also welcome back to Lee Worswick who missed all of last season with injury.

Nantwich did actually make the better start of the two sides with three good chances in the first fifteen minutes, the best of which saw Ryan Smith clip the outside of the post. FC gradually made their own impact, Davison Banda coming close before debutante Jay Walcott neatly slotted past Michael Jones in the Nantwich goal from a strong run and pass by Jake Haslam.

This wasn’t enough to upset Nantwich who were good value for the equaliser that came five minutes before half time when, in returning an FC clearance with interest, Josh Lane found himself in space with plenty of time to shoot Andrew Farrimond and into the corner of the net. Jay Walcott was unfortunate not tot to restore the lead soon afterwards when a corner dropped to him and his effort was just wide.
The second half though was largely controlled by the reds although Nantwich were not easily beaten. Carl Fitton had two good efforts whilst Josh Burke was unlucky to see an effort deflected on to the crossbar and out for a corner on the hour mark. It was Josh who started the move that saw FC take a decisive lead with fifteen minutes remaining. His cross flashed across the Nantwich box out towards the far wing, the return was too quick for the Nantwich defence and Ryan Westwood also capped his debut with a flashing drive from the edge of the box.

Nantwich were unfortunate not to equalise in the 82nd minute when a ball into the box evaded everyone and everything except the post, Andrew Farrimond pounced on the rebound.

Then as the light faded and the game drew to a close Nantwich twice fell to the sucker punch of failing to deal with clearances from Farrimond in midfield, leaving first Scott Cheetham to strike a delicious lob over the keeper and Walcott with a more measured strike to complete the scoring.

The lads make the long trek to Morecambe on Sunday and return to St Brides on the 12th against Woodley, kicking off at 14:30. Further fixtures will be announced here as and when known.
