Match Report
FC United crashed to a 3-1 defeat against Nantwich Town at Gigg Lane on Wednesday night as the Dabbers obliterated the Reds with three goals in ten second half minutes before David Chadwick scored a late consolation.

United came into the match without five first team players and as the encounter wore on it was clear that the Reds missed the attacking creative flair that Wolfenden, Cottrell and Roca bring to the game as they look to claw back a three goal deficit.

The game started ordinarily enough with both teams using the early stages to feel each other out and find their footing in what most anticipated would be a close game.

United’s first opportunity came from a slack back pass that was intercepted by Mike Norton who just couldn’t get the ball past the Dabbers ‘keeper from inside the box.

Norton was again at the heart of one of the few attacking moves of a slow paced first half as he returned Daniel Grimshaw’s ball to him inside the area before Grimshaw saw his effort blocked out by some resolute defending from the visitors.

The warning signs were there for United on more than one occasion towards the end of the half as a ball across the box beat all defenders and goalkeeper but luckily there wasn’t a Dabbers player there to put it away, and right on the stroke of half time James Spencer was called into action to paw away a well placed shot for a corner.

But within ten crucial minutes United found themselves three goals behind and still maybe scratching their heads wondering where triple whammy had come from.

Michael Lennon put the visitors ahead on 55 minutes as he finished from a tight angle after some forgettable defending saw United fail to clear the danger. Seven minutes later and the lead was doubled as midfielder Sean Cooke curled in a beautifully placed free-kick from 25 yard out that was right in the top corner of Spencer’s net leaving the United goalkeeper no chance of stopping it.

And any hopes the Reds had of getting something from the game were killed off in the 64th minute when Neil Maguire left Spencer rooted to the spot as he too fired home from range, putting the ball in the exact same spot as Cooke had moments earlier to give the Dabbers an unassailable three goal cushion.

United had thrown Ben Deegan on during the break, looking to add some physical force to their attack but creating chances seemed to be the problem and the long balls over the top often meant the Deegan and Norton were feeding on scraps for large parts of the evening.

There was a glimmer of hope for the Reds when veteran centre-half Chadwick rose well at the far post to finish off a well worked ball on the left flank with a little over ten minutes to go.

However, the goal proved to be nothing more than a consolation for United who’s best efforts in the dying embers came from long range strikes from Michael Carr and Daniel Grimshaw, neither of which tested the opposing goalkeeper.

The defeat was United’s third on the bounce and sees them without a win in four, and worryingly without a win at Gigg Lane this season. The Reds must now dust themselves off for an FA Cup tie at home to Woodley Sports on Saturday when last season’s giant-killers know they will have the target painted on them this time around.
