Match Report
FC United’s women’s team beat Middleton Athletic 4-1 in a tough encounter on Broadhurst to confirm a fantastic league runners up spot in their first-ever season. Unfortunately Manchester City have an unassailable lead at the top, but wins for FC in their last three games will close the gap to just two points. First half strikes by Beth Tattersall and a Kayleigh Catterall penalty were supplemented by second half goals from Amy Vyas and Claire O’Reilly, sandwiching a Middleton consolation from Chelsea Cook.

Middleton, in their distinctive pink and black striped shirts, started the game below a cloudy sky, kicking against the breeze. The early kick off seemed to catch the FC cold as Middleton dominated for much of the first six minutes, compressing the play exclusively in United’s half. Former FC player Lucy Golding was in determined mood looking dangerous up front and a speculative effort from Shevaughn Hurndall went close before Joanna O’Connell went closer still with a dipping drive that just cleared Amy Gillingham’s bar.

On seven minutes, FC relieved some of the pressure as Kirsty Chambers raided down the left but her delivery sailed harmlessly behind Claire Jefferson’s goal. Nevertheless the ball was now at the right end as FC looked to organise higher up the pitch and gradually play their way into proceedings. They created their first chance on 12 minutes as the pace of Tattersall carried her beyond the Middleton backline onto a Broghan Matthews ball over the top to fire goalwards. Jefferson held the shot well.

Tattersall’s pace was a serious threat to a well organised Middleton defence and on 19 minutes good midfield interchange between ‘Liv Greenhalgh and Catterall resulted in a superb through ball from the latter which created a head-on race between Tattersall and Jefferson. Totally committed, they slid together 15 yards from goal with the FC winger just connecting with the ball fractionally before a painful collision as it rolled unscathed into an unguarded net to give FC the lead slightly against the run of play.

Middleton reacted positively to the setback and looked to press and harry FC at every opportunity, sometimes a little too enthusiastically as Golding and Gillingham clashed over a debatable loose ball in the six yard area. O’Connell again came close with a drive from range as the game entered an evenly matched spell approaching the half hour. FC once more enjoyed good service from Tattersall down the right as she repeatedly outstripped full back Holly Golding and on this occasion fired a superb cross that Shellby Wolstencroft almost connected with. Lone striker Wolstencroft was soon on hand once again as she raced onto a through ball into the area, controlled well and in the action of shooting was hacked from behind leaving referee Ross Evans no option but to award a penalty. Catterall stepped up and confidently stroked the ball to Jefferson’s left into the bottom corner doubling United’s lead on 35 minutes and giving the keeper no chance.

The half ended with FC United in the ascendancy and having had a superb Beth Hayes strike, following an excellent interchange between Greenhalgh, Wolstencroft and Hayes, ruled out for offside on 40 minutes.

United commenced second half proceedings as the game took on a feistier edge requiring referee Evans to restore calm and reason. No quarter was being asked or given as Middleton looked for a way back into the game and on 53 minutes an uncompromising challenge between Lucy Golding and Fran Davies left the FC vice-captain requiring treatment on a shin injury but thankfully able to carry on.

Vyas, on after the break for Wolstencroft, had the first real chance of the second half as she rounded Jefferson but took the ball too wide where she was eventually tackled. However, she was to find her shooting boots just past the hour, volleying a Hayes pass into the bottom left corner of Jefferson’s goal to leave Middleton with a mountain to climb.

To their credit the pink and black stripes kept battling, earning their reward and a slight glimmer of hope with quarter of an hour left as Chelsea Cook broke through the Red’s defence to fire beyond Gillingham into the corner of the goal.

However, just six minutes later, FC extinguished all hope of a Middleton comeback as Vyas shot powerfully, forcing Jefferson to only parry the ball into the path of O’Reilly who gratefully wrapped up the afternoon’s scoring to record a hard earned 4-1 victory.

Website player of the match: Effective, pacey displays of wing play down the right and the all-important first goal in a close encounter mean that Beth Tattersall takes this week’s accolade.

In Memory of Emma McDougall (Mincher):

The early kick off allowed the FC women’s team, staff and supporters to head straight for Bower Fold (where the first team were in top of the table action in front of a bumper crowd) to continue fundraising efforts with a bucket collection in memory of Emma McDougall (Mincher) from Blackburn Rovers Ladies. Emma sadly passed away recently at the age of 21 following a battle with cancer. Thank you to the league, match referee and Middleton Athletic for agreeing to the early kick off and for the generosity of all who contributed to the collection which has raised in excess of £500 for Emma’s family to assist them at this difficult time.
