Match Report
FC United must go into the play-offs for the fourth consecutive season after our 3-0 win at Barwell wasn’t enough to catch champions Chorley who won 2-0 at Buxton.

Goals from Tom Davies, Michael Norton and Callum Byrne made sure the Reds did everything we could on the final day of the season to catch The Magpies but they sealed the title by one point by winning in Derbyshire.

Karl Marginson’s side will now play fifth placed Ashton United on Tuesday night at Gigg Lane for a place in the play-off final, which, if we win, will be at Gigg Lane on Saturday afternoon against Fylde or Worksop Town.

The Reds started the game brightly knowing they had to get the victory to keep any hopes of the title alive and Matthew Wolfenden almost put the Reds a goal up within a minute placing his shot just wide of the post with an effort from outside of the area.

The home team had a period of pressure where a combination of long throws and corner kicks had the United defence scrambling to clear the ball and keep the scores level.

United took the lead after Liam Brownhill floated a free kick into the box from the right flank and Tom Davies rose well to powerfully head home and ease the tension among the United faithful.

After this United pushed on looking dangerous with every attack, Tom Greaves coming the closest to adding to the score when he fired over from inside the box.

They did get the second on the half hour mark when Brownhill threaded the ball into the box before Norton got it onto his right and slotted into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 to United.

With a two goal cushion all eyes turned to the Buxton-Chorley game which was still 0-0 but just three minutes left of the first half the news broke that the league leaders had broken the deadlock. You always felt if Chorley scored first it would be hard for Buxton to spring a surprise and because of this the second half of our game became a little flat on and off the pitch.

The majority of the second half as played at a low tempo and really the home team could and should have had a way back into the game with a fine reaction stop from Dave Carnell being the only thing stopping Barwell getting back into the game.

Substitute Callum Byrne rounded things off late on when the home ‘keeper came out to take both Norton and the ball out before Byrne coolly lofted the ball above the defenders and into the goal to give United a 3-0 win which proved not to be enough for the title but guaranteed home advantage for the play-offs.

Congratulations to the players, staff and fans of Chorley FC on clinching the title and promotion to the Conference North, but for United it’s the fourth consecutive year in the play-offs and another meeting with neighbours Ashton United at Gigg Lane on Tuesday evening.

Man of the match: Liam Brownhill – Made the first two goals and his delivery from set pieces was a constant danger all afternoon.
