Wright strikes as FC United win penultimate game of the season at Gainsborough Trinity

FC United won 1-0 at Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday afternoon courtesy of a superb Jerome Wright strike in the 53rd minute in the penultimate game of the Reds’ first season in the Vanarama National League North.

With safety from relegation already assured in midweek for Karl Marginson’s side, the game had the feel of a pre-season friendly. However, there were still points to be played for and the Reds made sure they took all three.

The game started in cagy fashion, Trinity, who at the start of the game still needed a point to be sure of staying up, making most of the early running. On 18 minutes, skipper Nathan Jarman was played clear but his weak lob was never troubling FC United goalkeeper Dylan Forth.

Just after the half hour mark, Jamie Yates was tripped in the FC box, the official waved away the appeals but it did seem a generous decision to the visiting Reds. As halftime approached, Jarman again went close but he saw his glancing header kicked off the line by Dale Tonge.

After the break, FC United made a change, bringing on Tom Greaves to try to put pressure on the home defence. It nearly paid off immediately as Dale Johnson headed wide.

On 53 minutes, the deadlock was broken when a superb ball from George Thomson found Wright. The skipper controlled the ball, cut inside and fired a great shot past Jan Budtz in the Trinity goal. A minute later, Wright almost made it two, when his powerful lob cannoned back off the crossbar.

Gainsborough stepped up the pace as the half wore on, Stephen Brogan and Marc Newsham both shooting wide. The home side looked to have been unlucky again with the penalty shouts as Luke Ashworth took down Jarman in the box, Mr Wooton turning down the appeals.

With 10 minutes on the clock, Newsham was played clear of the FC United defence, Forth tipping the shot wide. The referee brought proceedings to an end, with the home side confirmed safe due to results elsewhere.

Website man of the match - Sam Sheridan. Sheridan again proved his worth to FC United with a busy midfield display with crisp passing and strong tackling.
