Six goal United through to quarter finals after beating Chadderton

Six goal United through to quarter finals after beating ChaddertonFC United are through to the quarter finals of the Manchester Premier Cup after winning 6-0 at Chadderton on Tuesday night, courtesy of a George Thomson hat-trick, a Tom Greaves brace and one from Tom Eckersley.

The Reds are into the last eight teams of the competition and will now travel to Abbey Hey during the week commencing 14th November.

After Saturday’s defeat away at Telford, manager Karl Marginson opted for a strong starting XI, looking to get back to winning ways before the weekend trip to Kidderminster. From the off it was clear that an experienced starting line-up would have too much for our hosts.

The Reds (who were playing in the third strip of blue for the evening) were 2-0 up within 15 minutes and their dominance was clear considering that we’d hit the woodwork and had a chance cleared off the line in that time as well.

Thomson opened the scoring with his first of three on the evening just after 10 minutes and moments later Greaves had found the net from a corner to make it 2-0 and put FC clearly in the driving seat.

The conditions were difficult to say the least but even in the heavy rain the player put a great shift in. The Reds seemed dangerous throughout and every time they ventured forward they looked more like a cohesive attacking unit, something which hasn’t been said too often this season.

Thomson seemed to be enjoying the game, splitting the defence with killer passes into the channels. Ten minutes before the break he grabbed his second with a low hard shot from the edge of the box after demanding the ball to his feet from a short corner.

David Carnell had been a spectator for the first 45 minutes, but as the second half began the visitors came out quickly calling the FC United shot-stopper into action with a trio of great reaction saves to keep the three goal advantage.

It wasn’t long until the lead was extended as the gulf in class became clearer as the game wore on, especially on such a heavy pitch. When Greaves grabbed his second and FC United’s fourth early in the second half, it was game over.

In the last 10 minutes, FC United had the ball in the net twice. From a corner, two chances were cleared off the line before Eckersley powered it into the back of the net to make it 5-0.

Moments later, it seemed only fitting that Thomson got his hat-trick to complete the scoring late on as he took the ball at the edge of the box and thundered it home to complete a one sided victory and send FC United into the next round.

The Reds are into the last eight and will travel to Abbey Hey with one eye on some potential silverware, but most importantly they got back some confidence and their winning mentality before a tricky away encounter this coming weekend.

Website man of the match: George Thomson – A hat trick in a game where he looked like he was having fun, both he and Greaves led from the front and grabbed five of the team’s six goals between them.
