FC Women fire 9 past Moston Brook in Friendly Local Derby

With no scheduled competitive game on Sunday afternoon, United’s Women welcomed local side, Moston Brook FC to Broadhurst Park for a friendly designed to give Luke Podmore’s wider squad some important game time as the season enters its final weeks.

The game also allowed debutants Holly Shute and Izzy Crooks, currently trialling with the reds, an opportunity to showcase their skills in the second half. There were many excellent performances right throughout the side in awful weather conditions also braved by 43 hardy supporters.

United scored 9 without reply with Shellby Wolstencroft grabbing a double hatrick, 3 in each half, with further goals from Allisha Marsh, Olivia Gannon and Adora Yau. In addition Amy Vyas rattled the crossbar, Olivia Greenhalgh the post and Kirsty Chambers had a last minute goal disallowed for off side.

Despite the score line the Greater Manchester Women’s Football League Division 2 side gave a very good account of themselves, particularly goal keeper Jess Axon who pulled off a succession of fine saves throughout the contest. Our thanks go to Moston Brook for agreeing to a game at short notice and we wish them well for the rest of their season.

With United currently second in the league courtesy of goal difference, they travel to Liverpool to face leaders Merseyrail Bootle next Sunday to try and avenge the 5-1 home defeat back in December. Get yourselves to that football ground and support the team who are always appreciative of the excellent following they get.
