On August Bank Holiday Monday, Darlington ran out 3-2 winners against FC United at Broadhurst Park. Darlington were 2 goals up after 27 minutes but goals from Gilchrist and Thomson levelled before Darlington’s Nathan Cartman secured victory 8 minutes from time.

Darlington Football Club who were founded in 1883, went into administration in 2004, in 2009, and again in October 2011. At the end of the 2011/12 season Darlington were relegated to the Conference North and on 21 June 2012 Darlington FC ceased to exist. The club was taken over by Darlington1883, a group of local fans, with the intention of moving into community ownership.

The phoenix club, unable to use the name Darlington FC, was named Darlington 1883. (However the FA has now recently approved the club’s request to revert back to the traditional name of Darlington FC for the 2017-18 season.)

By March 2013 it was confirmed that the Darlington Football Club Community Interest Company, which represents around 800 fan-members, had taken a 52% stake in the football club, making it a supporter and community owned football club.

The new club began the 2012/13 season in the Northern Football League Division One (Level 9) where they finished top of the league and were promoted to the Northern Premier League Division One North (Level 8) where they spent two seasons. In 2014/15 Darlington gained promotion to the Northern Premier League Premier Division (Level 7) and went on to win the league to seal promotion to the National League North (Level 6).

This season, after spending 4 seasons ground sharing at Bishop Auckland, they moved back to Darlington to play their home matches at Blackwell Meadows (home of Darlington RFC). On 26th December 2016, Darlington played their first game at Blackwell Meadows against Halifax Town in front of a capacity 3,000 crowd.
