We are delighted to announce that on Saturday 8th July we are playing an International friendly with fan-owned Bohemian FC. The match will be played at the Dalymount Park ground in North Dublin, kick off 3.00pm.

Bohemian FC, more commonly referred to as Bohs, were founded on 6 September 1890 in the Phoenix Park Gate Lodge beside the North Circular Road entrance and played its first games in the Park’s Polo Grounds. One of the founding members of the League of Ireland in 1921, after their withdrawal from the Irish Football League.

They established themselves as a major force within the first 15 years of the League of Ireland, winning 5 league titles, 2 FAI Cups and 4 Shields, but struggled for decades after that, largely due to their strict amateur status, going 34 seasons without winning a major trophy.

They dropped their amateur ethos in 1969 and proceeded to win 2 League titles, 2 FAI Cups and 2 League cups during the 1970s. They suffered a further decline throughout the 1980s and most of the 1990s before claiming League and Cup doubles in 2001 and 2008, alongside the 2003 and most recently 2009 title wins.

Dalymount Park has a capacity of 3,193. Bohs’ average crowd is about 2,000. Dalymount’s record attendance was put at 48,000, for an Irish international game against England on 19 May 1957. A similar crowd attended the first entry of an Irish team into the European Cup, when Shamrock Rovers played Manchester United in 1957.

Sammy McIlroy, who is one of the guest speakers at FC United’s Gala Dinner on 19th May, made his United debut against Bohemian FC in January 1971, making him the 3rd youngest ever player to play for United at the age of 16 years, 172 days. United Manager Tommy Docherty, also speaking at FC’s Gala Dinner, signed Gerry Daly (in 1973) and Ashley Grimes (in 1977) from Bohemian FC.
