FC's Women maintain unbeaten pre-season run with victory over Brighouse Town

Women’s Premier League 1 opponents, Brighouse Town Ladies, brought their first team to Broadhurst Park on Sunday afternoon having inflicted FC’s only pre season defeat this time last year with a 3-2 win.
United avenged last season’s defeat winning their toughest pre season test to date 3-1 with a brace from Jess Battle sandwiching a first strike for FC from Fliss Winters; Brighouse scoring a last minute consolation through Becky Kendell.

United started the game on the front foot with Jess McCarrick and Rebecca Foster fashioning chances in the opening minute and on 10 minutes Ella Schickhoff almost opened the scoring flashing a half volley just wide.
Brighouse Town settled into the game with Lauren Doyle tangling with Olivia Greenhalgh on the near post and firing her effort onto the shins of Gemma Jackson guarding her post well. On the quarter hour Kendell fired from range without troubling Jackson unduly.

In a close encounter it was going to take something special to open the scoring and Battle duly obliged just past the half hour finishing a move from front to back with a sublimely accurate strike from 18 yards right into the top corner, giving Steph Jones no chance in the Brighouse goal.
United pressed on and doubled their lead three minutes later as Schickhoff’s persistence forced a corner that was swept to the back post by Greenhalgh. Battle was on hand to fire the ball back into a crowded six yard box where Winters reacted fastest to slot the ball home from close range.
Kendell and Danni Brown tried to fashion a response before the break but the reds held firmly to their two goal lead going into half time.
From the restart United progressed superbly down the left in a move that involved Abbie Carrington, Greenhalgh, Foster, Schickhoff and debutant Anya Donelan as the reds pinned Brighouse back. As the play switched to the right Geraldine Sommer earned a corner swept in superbly by Donelan, headed off the line for Schickhoff to fire wide.

Patience and persistence paid off as United grabbed the game’s decisive third goal. Battle who had previously gone close twice in the preceding moments, made it third time lucky as Sommer lofted a superb cross to beyond the back post where Battle controlled superbly firing across Jones and into the bottom corner.
Battle and Sommer forced Jones into good saves late in the game and with a minute to go Kendell latched onto an under-weight back pass and rounded the out rushing Jackson firing on goal deflecting off Carrington as the defender tried valiantly to cover the line with Fran Davies as the ball found its way into the goal in virtually the last action of another comprehensive pre season performance.
On a day that ended with England’s semi final victor’s, the Netherlands, winning Euro 2017 on home soil, the profile of the Women’s game has arguably never been higher and FC United are well placed to move the game ever forward in our corner of Manchester and far beyond; positively raising our club’s profile still further in the process. Embrace the revolution and get yourself to our football ground next Sunday as we welcome Rhyl & Prestatyn Ladies to Broadhurst Park; 2pm. The big kick off, season 6 for our women, is now less than a month away.

Summary Report by Rob Fullen
FC Player of the game: Jess Battle, in a very strong all round team performance, once again a combative and skilful contribution from the diminutive striker scoring two and setting up the other. Special mention for the excellent Geraldine Sommer in her final appearance for the reds before returning to her native Switzerland next weekend; She may be back one day all being well?
