Match Report
There probably aren’t many less exciting things to do than spend a wet Friday night in Leeds, but the FC United Development Squad spent this one productively at the Headingly Campus of Leeds University beating Eccleshill United 6-2. Matthew Boland’s four goals were ably supported by strikes from Jon Poizer and Frank van Gils.

It risks becoming a cliché to say that the lads started brightly but with efforts from Maynard and Hibbert in the first five minutes it is nonetheless true. It took eleven minutes for FC to open the scoring, Poizer taking a pass from Boland to run clear of the defence and scored. It was around this point that what had started as occasional showers moving through to light rain became a torrential downpour for the remainder of the first half and just heavy for the second.

FC continued to press Eccleshill into their own half, Boland and Van Gils coming close around the fifteen minute mark. The home side did then begin to find a way in to the FC half , a 21st minute free kick drifting across goal reminding the lads that they were going to have some defensive work to do. Eccleshill equalised two minutes later when, breaking up an FC attack, Dylan Stone raced forward and lashed a shot from at least 25 yards into the roof of the net.

That goal merely stung the reds into action and within five minutes Boland had scored twice. Firstly a pass from Cheetham allowed him space to calmly shoot past Davey in the home goal. If that goal was the product of good football the next one was something of a gift. On a sodden pitch, what would normally be a good ball into space for a winger to chase from Richard Smith, was running through to Davey. He then inexplicably lost control of the ball and Boland; who was chasing forward, gratefully accepted the gift.

Van Gils made it 4-1 with a spectacular bicycle kick on 34minutes as the home side failed to clear a Poizer free kick and was denied a second five minutes later only by a finger tip save from Davey as he headed a Poizer cross goalwards.

The rain slowed to a mere downpour for the second half and stung by a half time team talk the home side managed to limit the FC chances; Hibbert and Maynard came close early on but there were no real chances until 67 minutes when the homeside pulled a goal back. In a crowded area a pass back from Hibbert to Taylor arrived at chest height and with a need to do something quickly he instinctively punched the ball away and the referee awarded an indirect free kick around in front of goal six yards out. Although Eccleshill scored, the referee ordered the kick to be retaken as the first touch was deemed not to have travelled far enough. The relief for FC was only temporary as the outcome was the same and this time the goal stood.

Eccleshill then thought they could get back into the game but were disappointed less than five minutes later when Van Gils was tripped in the area. Boland stepped up to take the kick, striking to Davey’s right. The keeper guessed correctly and got a hand to the ball, unfortunately it was not strong enough and the ball spun in to the corner of the net.

That was the end of the chances for the home side and FC dominated possession. Although Doyle and Burke made an impact coming off the bench, Lewis Adams deserves praise for his twelve minute contribution in which he with Cheetham constantly switched between left back and left midfield and combined with Van Gils to offer a puzzle they couldn’t answer. In one exchange on 88 minutes Van Gils crossed for Boland to add his fourth and FC’s sixth of the night.
