Match Report
There was heartbreak in the League Cup semi-final for the FC United women’s team on Sunday, as Chorltonians won 3-2 in a tight contest on neutral territory to progress to meet Middleton Athletic in the final after the Latics demolished Reddish North End on the adjacent pitch.

A depleted United squad were faced with a full-strength Chorltonians side but this should not detract in any way from the Hough Enders, who had endured two league defeats at the hands of the Reds earlier in the season, as they were well organised throughout and took their chances with aplomb. Starting the brighter, Chorltonians took the lead on four minutes through Charlai Walton and doubled their advantage a quarter of an hour later as the impressive Jordanna King slotted home a penalty she had earned. Kirsty Chambers halved the deficit midway through the half before King struck the killer goal superbly on the stroke of half time. Incessant second-half FC pressure brought a goal back courtesy of Charlie Evans in the 92nd minute but it was too little too late.

As with all games across the country this weekend, the semi final respectfully kicked off seven minutes past the hour after a well observed silence in memory of the 96 Liverpool fans who perished in an FA Cup semi at Hillsborough 25 years ago.

Playing with the stiff chilly breeze in the first half FC United started brightly but in their first foray forward, Chorltonians earned themselves a corner which cleared the defenders crowded around the near post to land on the penalty spot where Walton half volleyed past FC’s unsighted stand-in keeper Shellby Wolstencroft leaving her rooted as the ball nestled in the back of the net on four minutes.

As United searched for a way back, Jemma Doyle burst through midfield and was obstructed just outside the ‘D’ giving Chambers the opportunity from a set piece but her curling shot dipped just too late as it narrowly cleared the bar with Alice McNorton beaten in the Chorltonians’ goal. This spurred the green and black stripes forward as the pacey King raced down the right edge of the area forcing Amy Battel to make a challenge that referee Mallon adjudged to be unfair and inside the area. King herself took the spot kick which sent Wolstencroft the wrong way and doubled Chorltonians’ lead inside 20 minutes.

A quick response was now essential and the dependable FC captain provided a boost as Adora Yau curled a superb ball down the left touchline which Chambers flicked over the full back and surged goalwards. Despite the attentions of three defenders Chambers jinked her way through the challenges before slotting the ball calmly under the advancing McNorton to halve the deficit midway through the half.

Jayme Blake stung Wolstencroft’s hands with a half volleyed drive following an excellent surge down the left and deep cross from Walton but it was United who increasingly threatened an equaliser as the half drew to a close. Then came the sucker punch and what was ultimately to prove the decisive strike of the match on 45 minutes. Natalie Callaghan took a throw in level with the FC box and King swivelled 270 degrees catching her half volley superbly from the angle of the penalty area and watched as her looping effort dipped just under the bar beyond the despairing leap of Wolstencroft to give Chorltonians a two-goal cushion going into the break.

The second half was a story of FC domination in terms of possession and attacking intent. Chorltonians mounted a superb rear-guard action throughout under increasing pressure as United looked to claw their way back into the game. The last in a series of corners in quick succession saw Battel scramble a shot goalwards following chaos in the six-yard box but somehow McNorton reacted brilliantly to tip the close range effort onto the bar and away from danger. With 20 minutes remaining Beth Hayes, released from her defensive shackles, volleyed just over from a Chambers’ corner and minutes later unchallenged, Aimee Cooke headed over the bar from yet another corner.

In the dying moments, after referee Mallon had signalled three minutes additional time, United final summoned the half’s first goal as a deep cross was latched onto by Charlie Evans who had broken free of the defence and fired unerringly across McNorton in the 92nd minute. Straight from the restart, United won back possession and filled with renewed belief forced a free kick wide on the right hand flank. The Chorltonians’ area was packed for the final dramatic act as Chambers lofted the ball goalward and in one of those slow motion moments, players, officials, coaches and spectators held their collective breath as the ball floated over McNorton only to cannon off the bar to be cleared to safety as the referee brought the game to a close. So close to forcing extra time but just not close enough. United’s women still have one more opportunity to end the season on a high and are in the semi final of the Challenge Cup in the coming weeks – keep an eye on the website for details.
