Match Report
United United day can only be looked upon as a storming success. Another record attendance breaking Wednesday night’s short-lived best, a super performance on the pitch from the boys in red and some breathtakingly good goals amongst the 6 scored. The only downside to a magnificent day would be the difficulties that some latecomers had in gaining entry to the ground and then in finding a suitable place to sit/stand. To the credit of the club and stewards the initial issues were dealt with quickly and everyone did find a seat eventually with the Manchester Road End a lockout for the second successive game.

The only changes from the Wednesday line-up saw Mark Rawlinson missing the start for the first time this season as Darren Lyons took over on the right wing. In addition, Steve Torpey is currently out with a hamstring strain so Joz Mitten was recalled to frontline duties.

The kick-off was delayed by some 10 minutes to enable most of the late arrivals entry to the ground before Daisy Hill kicked off attacking the Manchester Road End or, perhaps slightly more accurately, defending the Cemetery End! The visitors held their own for the first quarter of the match and although Barrie George had little to do all afternoon the backline in front of him still spent plenty of time defending.

FC United dominated possession throughout but the first real threat on the Daisy Hill goal came on 20 minutes as a Lyons corner from the left was half cleared. The ball was quickly returned goalwards and eventually fell to Adie Orr just inside the area. Orr hit a right footed shot that beat Williams in the visitor’s goal but struck the underside of the cross bar. The ball rebounded out to David Chadwick who flung himself forwards and headed against the inside of the post with the keeper well beaten. This time the rebound fell kindly for the blue-shirted visiting team and one of their number deposited it into the Cemetery End seats for another United corner kick which was well cleared.

United were building a momentum and it seemed as though it was only a matter of time before the breakthrough. On 24 minutes Billy McCartney played a long ball out from the back which Joz Mitten expertly flicked on to Orr. Adie crossed in from the left just too high for Patterson but Simon Carden arrived at the back post but saw his attempt, at full stretch, go the wrong side of the post.

Soon after and Mitten was brought down 22 yards out just to the right of centre. The big man required some lengthy treatment and during this period I’m sure most in the ground thought the same as me that this was Steve Torpey territory. Unfortunately our long distance specialist was with the massed ranks in the MRE and not available to add to his reputation as a freekick specialist on this occasion. We need not have worried though because Daz Lyons stepped up and hit a right foot drive inside of the left hand post and into the net to open the scoring; Torpey? Who the hell is Torpey? 1-0.

This opener had the desired effect, from an FC United perspective anyway, and it spurred the boys on to add 3 more goals within a torrid ten minute tirade. Next to register was Mitten who rose majestically to despatch an inviting Lyons cross. The header was both powerful and accurate leaving Williams again with nothing to do but pick the ball out of the net. 2-0.

One minute later, after 32 minutes, Simon Carden bundled the ball in from close range after a neat move. Gareth Ormes supported well on the left flank, his cross was delivered beyond the far post where Patterson met it and returned it towards goal. Carden was on hand to prod home from no more than a yard or two out to score his second goal of the week. 3-0.

The fourth was scored on 37 minutes and Mitten was the architect. He received a ball in from Elvin after a poorly struck clearance by the Daisy Hill keeper. Mitten did well to make a bit of space before striking goalwards with his right foot from just outside of the box. Williams reacted well to the drive but could only parry as he dived to his left. Rory Patterson followed up and had a fairly simple task to tap in from 8 yards out and he made no mistake. 4-0.

To be fair to Daisy Hill despite being on the wrong end of this ten minute battering their heads never went down and they themselves fashioned a couple of opportunities before the half drew to a close. Both of these chances resulted from mistimed challenges near the edge of the FC United box, firstly Billy McCartney caught Cartridge and then a few minutes later Chadwick brought down McGill. Both freekicks were squandered and unfortunately for the visitors McGill could not resume, despite receiving treatment, and was replaced by Danny Williams.

The second period started with United still dominating but Daisy Hill enjoyed more possession as the half unfolded and kept the goals conceded down to only 2. Adie Orr scored them both. The first resulted from a speedy United counter-attack with Carden being the spearhead. The FC United number 8 carried the ball forwards from the edge of his own area as a Daisy Hill corner kick fell to him. Carden exchanged passes with Mitten and continued his advance into the Daisy Hill half. Patterson was screaming for the pass to Carden right but the he chose to thread a more difficult ball through to Orr who was speeding down the inside left channel. Adie looked to have miss-controlled but recovered quickly enough to slot the ball into the bottom right corner from just inside the area, again giving Gareth Williams no chance whatsoever. 5-0.

With the game well and truly safe now Margy decided to give some pitch time to all 3 of his substitutes so Rawlinson, Cullen and Coyne replaced Elvin, Spencer and Carden. Not surprisingly the United fluency was slightly interrupted as the newcomers got up to speed. During the next 15 minute period, immediately after the home substitutions, the visitors had their best spell of the match. Hibbert shot into the side-netting after Ormes was wrong-footed by a deflection, Nick Maund forced Barrie George into a decent stop as the Daisy Hill number 2 tried a speculative shot from distance. Cartridge even had the ball in the home net but his ‘goal’ was chalked off for offside after great work by Darrell Gavin down the Daisy Hill right flank. In this same period Mitten also had the ball in the Daisy Hill net twice more but both of these were ruled out for offside.

The scoring was rounded off by Orr’s second and the best goal of the match. The United number 11 made a little bit of room with some neat footwork before striking an unstoppable shot with power and curl into the top right corner of the net from just outside of the penalty area. 6-0.

Karl Marginson will have been relieved to have seen a good performance from his squad who had been well below their high early season standards in the last few matches. Joz Mitten was announced as the match sponsors, Associated Network Solutions plc, man of the match. I find it difficult to argue against their choice. Honourable mentions to Adie Orr who, along with Rory Patterson, is now joint club top scorer with 7 goals apiece. Chaddy was immense again at the heart of defence and surely will break that scoring hoodoo sometime soon!
