Match Report
FC United slumped to a seventh consecutive league defeat on Saturday afternoon, this time at the hands of Gainsborough Trinity at Broadhurst Park.

The Reds continued their worrying recent trend of going a goal behind early on as Simon Russell broke the deadlock for the Lincolnshire side inside six minutes.

United fought back and found a deserved equaliser just after the hour mark when Sam Madeley took advantage of a defensive slip to chip the ball over goalkeeper Jan Budtz to make it 1-1.

The Reds continued to press and it looked like they might find a winner or at the very least gain a draw to break their two month losing streak in the Vanarama National League North. However, against the run out play, Trinity showed the ruthlessness of the league when debutant Paul McKay headed home the winner with 15 minutes to go.

To say that the result reflected the performance would be an unfair analysis of Karl Marginson’s side. However, despite much second-half possession and presence in Gainsborough’s area, the end product was lacking.

The visitors had to wait one minute less than Chesterfield to score at Broadhurst Park as Stephen Brogan played the ball through the FC United backline to Simon Russell who slotted it away for an all too easy opener.

Both sides were contending with a difficult surface as the rain continued to fall relentlessly. United were managing to get forward and both Rory Fallon and Tom Greaves had shots on goal before Gainsborough cut through the FC defence once more and saw Nathan Jarman’s header cleared off the line.

It was Jarman who stepped up to take a free-kick in dangerous territory just outside the United area. A powerful drive pierced the FC United wall and goalkeeper Dave Carnell did well to hold the ball in slippery conditions.

The Reds’ performance was beginning to step up and they were unlucky not to force an equaliser during a scramble in the opposition area following a strong shot from Sam Sheridan. In added time at the end of the first half, the Sheridan set up Madeley for an effort that was well diverted by the outstretched leg of Budtz.

FC United made a good start after the break, showing attacking intent and forcing a great double-save from Budtz, initially from Adam Thurston’s shot and then from Greaves on the follow-up from close range.

New signing, Harry Winter made his entrance early in the second half, replacing Tom Brown in the middle. Despite Gainsborough then firing just wide, it could be sensed that United were in the ascendency as Thurston beat his man on the right and crossed well for Greaves to flick the ball goalwards, only to see it skid across the roof of the net.

Five minutes later, Madeley profited from the slips of two Gainsborough defenders on the edge of the area. The forward managed to keep his own feet to lift the ball over the keeper to give FC United a deserved equaliser.

The goal provided a clear confidence-boost and the Reds continued to attack, with substitute Greg Daniels coming close but Trinity broke United hearts against the run of play on 76 minutes via a corner.

The ball came in to the back post and Liam Davis headed back to McKay who grabbed the winner off the crossbar. The hope would have been that the ball hadn’t crossed the line; however this would only have been wishful thinking as Gainsborough celebrated at the St. Mary’s Road End.

United continued to press to the final whistle, keeping the ball in Gainsborough’s half for the majority of the remaining minutes. Despite many runs forward, balls into the box were not falling for FC and the visitors were able to take all three points from a sodden Broadhurst Park. FC United now look to Saturday’s trip to first-placed Nuneaton to try to get back on track in the league.

Website man of the match: Adam Thurston – settling into the side well at right-back and offering width on the right-hand side of the park.
