Match Report
A second half brace from Simon Carden and one from Stuart Rudd eased FC United past Padiham 3-0 and into Round Two of the FA Vase in front of 1,371 supporters.

Margy’s men marched in to the Lancashire mill town and were keen to get the job done against the North West Counties Division Two side at the Arbories Memorial Ground, but they had to work hard for their goals which were a while in coming.

The Reds had an ideal opportunity to take an early lead when Rory Patterson was brought down in the box by the Storks keeper King. However, Mr Mystery opted not to go for his trademark chip and instead he slotted the ball harmlessly wide of the left post.

For a while, as the game wore on, the miss looked like it could prove to be costly as United saw a number of chances blaze over the bar. Carden, making his first start since Curzon Ashton three weeks ago, had the best opportunity of the first half and was unfortunate to see his volley sail over the stand after connecting with a Rhodri Giggs cross.

The secong half was much the same as Padiham, ably marshalled by captain Paynter, dug in and refused to allow the Reds time on the ball. Rob Nugent and Rudd both sent close range headers high of target from Josh Howard corners and it was beginning to look like it might be one of those days.

But the Reds persevered and finally Carden broke the deadlock just after the hour when he linked up with Giggs again and this time managed to convert. The Welshman made a nuisance of himself all afternoon down the right wing and managed to create plenty of chances.

Carden soon added a second and put the game beyond any real doubt, although in truth Padiham had rarely looked like scoring as David Chadwick took charge at the back and Sam Ashton had little to worry about.

Although the home side didn’t allow them to get up to too much danger, Maty Taylor and Alex Mortimer were as keen as ever to get forward and overlap Giggs and Howard.

Steve Spencer put in another commanding performance in the centre of the park and gave the quartet, as well as Jamie Phoenix who was introduced late into the game, plenty of balls to run onto down the wings.

Adie Orr came on to replace Rory Patterson and could easily have scored after Ashton had hit the ball down the sloping pitch and the aerially dominant Rudd rose well to knock it on. Orr went through one-on-one with the keeper but took too much time over it and saw his shot pushed away for a corner.

The Reds continued to press Padiham and Carden had the opportunity to complete a hat-trick but he smacked the ball over the bar again after being set up on the edge of the box. In the final minute, Rudd latched on to a high bouncing through ball from the right hand side and lobbed it over the on rushing King to seal United’s victory and passage through to the draw for next round which takes place on Monday at 12.30pm.
