Match Report
FC Women’s 11 up for 11-0 County Cup Victory

In a week where the club are looking to appoint a replacement for Lee Sutton, Jay Astley, ably backed by his fellow coaches and strong togetherness in the squad, did his cause no harm as the team gave him a third victory on the spin (scoring 19 conceding just 1) since taking over in an interim capacity; maintaining their excellent, all important momentum.

In an away game at home, Didsbury Ladies requested the fixture switch to Broadhurst Park in order to ensure the game went ahead; as their South Manchester pitch had suffered at the hands of the recent wet spell. United certainly took advantage with a first half brace from captain and birthday girl, Kirsty Chambers bettered only by a hatrick from Jade Parker. A further six were added second half without reply as Shellby Wolstencroft bagged four in just 32 minutes with single strikes from Allisha Marsh and Danielle Xenophontus rounding off the 11-0 victory.

In contrast to recent blustery, icy wet days, Sunday afternoon was still and bright but deceptively cold as United got the game underway looking to warm things up from the off as Chambers stung the palms of Hayley Langridge in the Didsbury goal inside 30 seconds. Such was the power in the shot the keeper seemed to parry the ball over her goal line before clearing and despite protestations play went on. However, the already rampant reds were not to be denied for long. Chambers, Parker and Abbie Carrington combined well down the left and Chambers placed a powerful shot over Langridge and in at the far post to open the scoring on four minutes prompting a chorus of Happy Birthday for the captain from the 60 plus gathered pitch side.

Collecting the ball from Jess McCarrick deep in her own half, Beth Tattersall surged past four challenges down the right flank to the bye line and her low cross was intercepted but moments later, on a shorter burst, the winger squared to Amy Vyas whose deflected shot drifted wide.

Parker received a pass from midfield and her brilliant first touch took her between and away from Didsbury’s centre halves with her second touch poking the ball past the on rushing keeper to double the lead just before the quarter hour.

Didsbury FC Ladies, currently third placed in Greater Manchester Women’s Football League Division 1, were defending stoically but had little answer to pressure United were applying, almost at will. On 20 minutes Chambers had her second after another great break down the right saw Tattersall feed Parker whose low cross evaded the defence allowing Chambers to smash home from 10 yards at the back post.

On the half hour Parker had her second of the game and United’s fourth; Carrington, Leah Dolan and Fran Davies worked the ball well from the back into midfield finding Mia Holden who burst over half way and with options left and right she chose to feed Parker down the middle; one touch, a look up and the striker expertly lofted her shot over a back peddling Langridge from 30 yards.

Parker’s hatrick was complete just two minutes later as Adora Yau clipped a ball out to the right wing where Tattersall raced onto a 50/50 ball, poked it beyond the defender and forged a direct route to goal before unselfishly squaring to Parker with time to pick her spot before rifling past the keeper’s dive into the top corner.

As the half drew to a satisfactory close, Didsbury created a half chance with Stacey Burton and Susan Hackett combining well with Burton firing goalwards through a crowded area. Chloe Williams, a spectator for most of the half, showed excellent awareness and concentration to deny Didsbury a goal as the half ended 5–0 for the reds.

FC made four changes after the break, (the competition allowing roll on roll off changes) and within two minutes of the restart one of the substitutes, Shellby Wolstencroft scored her first of the afternoon. Vyas waltzed brilliantly through a congested midfield sliding a pass into the path of Dani Xenophontus and the striker shot early from 25 yards only to see Langridge make a fine two handed save five yards outside her area. The referee didn’t see the infringement and the loose ball spilled to Wolstencroft who kept her cool and chipped the ball over the back peddling keeper into the unguarded goal.

Wolstencroft bagged her brace and made it seven without reply on 55 minutes as the striker pounced upon a poor goal kick racing towards goal to clinically curl her shot past a rooted Langridge.

Xenophontus had her reward for toil and endeavour as Wolstencroft turned provider lofting a pass into the area for her strike partner to guide her left foot lob over the keeper to make it eight on 58 minutes.

Just passed the hour Marsh made it nine racing onto a superb pass, carrying the ball with purpose and directness towards goal guiding her shot past Langridge from seven yards. Marsh turned provider on 70 minutes as her teasing high cross to the far post was raced onto by Wolstencroft to volley home from just 2 yards out, sealing her hatrick and United’s 10th.

Didsbury almost bagged a consolation as the ball was worked forward to Burton and her powerful shot forced Williams into a good save on 72 minutes. Normal service was resumed and Wolstencroft wrapped up the scoring just two minutes later, bagging her fourth in a little over half an hour as she raced onto a ball over the top staying goal side of her defender and under pressure travelling at pace, coolly chipped the keeper for number 11 rounding off a fantastic team display and securing passage to the quarter finals.

FC Player of the game: Beth Tattersall – played an hour, didn’t get on the score sheet (not through lack of trying) but played like she was really enjoying her football and was a constant threat and provider down the right flank. Mentions also for all the scorers, particularly Shellby (4), Jade (3) and Kirsty (2). A really good all round team performance from all involved; starters, subs and coaches.
