Remember remember the 5th November - United's women ignite their title credentials
For the second consecutive week, United faced potential title rivals at Broadhurst Park and after overcoming West Didsbury and Chorlton a week ago, suitably dampened Curzon’s title aspirations with a 4-1 victory; a score line that flattered the visitors as a combination of poor finishing and goal keeping heroics from Alex Moon kept the tally down.

Curzon got off to the perfect start earning and scoring a penalty in the opening minutes, the first league goal conceded at home this season, and United responded with three unanswered goals of their own before half time from Jess Battle, Kirsty Chambers and Rebecca Foster. Beth Tattersall added the fourth on the hour and the reds managed the game to a comfortable conclusion to record six from six victories in the league.

On a cool bright bonfire afternoon in front of an impressive 153 spectators, United got the game underway looking to extend their unbeaten run. However, Curzon started well and the impressive Keeley Goodwin threatened inside the United area and was unceremoniously scythed down under an uncharacteristically rash challenge from Abbie Carrington. The United full back found her way into Steve Darlow’s notebook and Curzon skipper Amy Smith took responsibility confidently despatching the spot kick sending Gemma Jackson the wrong way on 4 minutes.

The reds responded in the best possible way taking the game to the visitors and 3 minutes later were on level terms. Chambers played the ball into Fran Sullivan’s feet with the midfielder turning goalwards and slotting Battle through on goal as the striker calmly slipped the ball under the advancing keeper to level the score.
Both Chambers and Olivia Greenhalgh came close to giving the reds a lead from corners and at the other end a lapse of defensive concentration almost handed Curzon a chance but eventually United worked the ball out of defence and into midfield where Foster’s superb ball fed the run of Chambers; the Captain took aim at full tilt from 20 yards with her shot going through Moon and into the back of the net giving United a 2-1 lead on the quarter hour.

Looking for a swift response, Curzon’s most likely outlet Goodwin raced into the area and Fran Davies matched the striker stride for stride blocking her shot at the expense of a corner that Jess McCarrick cleared calmly launching another United break with Chambers and Yvette Loukes combining well but to no avail.
On the half hour, a good spell of red possession and pressure resulted in arguably the best team goal of the afternoon resulting in an incisive one two between Foster and Sullivan with the former suddenly through on goal firing past Moon from 10 yards.

The half drew to a close with Curzon in the ascendancy and following their best spell of possession Goodwin was twice thwarted by excellent group defending from the United back three with Olivia Chan volleying wide as she arrived beyond the back post unopposed to meet a Chloe Wild cross on 45 minutes. However, United stood firm and went in at the break leading 3-1.

United started the second half on the front foot with Tattersall raiding at will down the right cutting back first to Sullivan followed a minute later supplying Battle with both being guilty of scuffing their respective efforts leaving Moon to clear up easily. On her third successive raid, Tattersall took matters into her own hands with Moon saving well at her near post.
Curzon broke with purpose and a last ditch, well timed tackle from Davies allowed United to regroup and just on the hour United surged forward with Nicole Hatcliffe sliding a pass into Chambers, squaring to Battle whose shot deflected behind for a corner. Chambers swept the ball in and Foster fired goalwards for Tattersall to turn the ball home from close range.

Despite being 4-1 down, Curzon responded well once again with Goodwin bursting through United’s defence who responded in numbers converging on the isolated No10 to nullify the danger. McCarrick came close for the red’s forcing Moon into another good save onto her post saving moments later from Sullivan also. Into stoppage time and an excellent punt forward by Jackson almost saw Loukes and McCarrick fashion a fifth for United but the excellent Danielle Baily showed good strength to deny the reds as the game ended with a valuable three points extending United’s lead at the top of the table.

Next Sunday, 12th November, United head to Merseyside to face City of Liverpool before returning to BP a week later when we welcome Altrincham. Get yourselves to those football grounds. Thank You.
