FC UNITED of MANCHESTER WOMEN 5 MOSSLEY HILL ATHLETIC LFC 0
FC United Women made it four league wins in a row after beating Mossley Hill Athletic 5-0 at Broadhurst Park, on Sunday.

A Jess Battle hat-trick and strikes from Kirsty Chambers and Kate O’Gara earned the Reds a comfortable win in the final home game of the calendar year.

Luke Podmore’s side went in to the game off the back of three straight league wins, after a 4-2 victory at Accrington Girls & Ladies, last weekend. The boss made two changes to the side that started seven days ago, with Abbie Carrington and Rebecca Foster both returning to the starting XI.

In an attempt to continue building the momentum that had been developed in recent weeks, the Reds started with the early attacking initiative. Jess Battle registered the first attempt of the game, firing at the goalkeeper after some neat linkup play with Cara Fields.

Battle may have been denied on that occasion but got her first of the game in the ninth minute. Abbie Carrington’s lofted ball down the left channel found Battle who smartly rounded the goalkeeper before squeezing the ball home from a tight angle.

The visitors attempted to mount a response at the other end, midway through the first half, but a confident showing of defensive play from Fran Davies saw the defender intercept the ball from the Mossley striker before playing to safety in the form of Chloe Ainsworth.

United’s solidity from the back laid the foundations for a free-flowing attacking spell towards the end of the first 45 minutes, with FC largely taking advantage of being on top. First, Jess Battle finished off Kirsty Chambers’ ball across goal to complete a fine team move and double both her own and the team’s tally for the day.

Had it not been for the offside flag, United’s number nine would have had her hat-trick on 44 minutes, having been found by Kirsty Chambers inside the box, once again. The roles then reversed in the first minute of added time as Jess Battle took down Chloe Ainsworth’s long kick before finding Kirsty Chambers’ run, with the captain showing composure to finish past the goalkeeper and give FCUMW a comfortable three-goal lead to head in to the break with.

Mossley’s threat on the break kept the game open after half time, but Kate O’Gara all-but put an end to the contest on 52 minutes. Chambers was again involved, sliding a pass across the box for the midfielder who was fortunate with her originally heavy touch coming back to her off the defender, before she found the net for the second time in three games.

O’Gara then turned provider less than two minutes later, threading her through-ball between two defenders to Battle who again went around the goalkeeper before placing the ball in to the net for her 25th goal of the season.

United made their first changes of the afternoon as the game entered the last half-an-hour, as Kirsty Chambers and Cara Fields were replaced by Sarah Chadwick and Hannah Dale.

On 71 minutes, the Reds went close to a sixth. Despite assertive work in defence all afternoon, centre-backs Emily Marsh and Fran Davies both had efforts on goal. First, Marsh’s close range strike was turned behind for a corner by the goalkeeper with Davies skewing a shot wide from the resulting corner.

In the closing stages, Corie Mather came on in place of Marsh and nearly made an immediate impact, but her driving run from the left was cut out just inside the box. Fellow substitute Sarah Chadwick then picked out Jess Battle in the box but the striker fired wide shortly before referee called time on United’s final home encounter 2018 – a year which has seen United win all eight of their games at Broadhurst Park and go unbeaten at the Moston home for the second successive calendar year.

Next up for the Reds is a trip to Fleetwood Town Wrens, in the league, on Sunday (9th December). Stay tuned to our social media platforms (@FCUnitedWomen) throughout the week for all the game details.

FCUMW Player of the Match: Jess Battle – The striker put in another trademark performance on Sunday that included her 23rd, 24th and 25th goals of the season, as she drew level on FCUMW hat-tricks with teammate Kirsty Chambers (17).
