FC United Women kicked-off their 2018/19 campaign with a 6-0 win over Didsbury FC Ladies, in the First Qualifying Round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup, yesterday afternoon. Aimee O’Keeffe’s second half strike completed the scoring after doubles from both Kirsty Chambers and Jess Battle, along with the opener courtesy of Sarah Chadwick had raced United out to a 5-0 lead at the break. The win starts FCUMW’s season with progression to the Second Qualifying Round of the competition for the third successive season.
Due to a clash with the men’s team home fixture at Broadhurst Park, United’s fixture took place at the stunning New Mills. The game was one of the only ever women’s team games to ever take place on that ground, and the spectators in attendance were treated to a fast start to the season opener. Shaunna Jein was alert to clear up a dangerous early attack launched by Didsbury, as FC looked to play with the early initiative, inside the opening three minutes.
The intent of getting off to a positive start was rewarded in the 4th minute, with United’s first goal of the season. Determined work from captain Kirsty Chambers to keep the ball saw a crossing opportunity open up on the left, the winger’s perfectly angled ball found the feet of a wide open Sarah Chadwick who was able to finish for her first competitive goal for FC on her competitive debut. Chadwick had previously found the net twice in pre-season, having signed from Manchester City Women in the summer.
That was to be the first of five goals that quickly saw United race out into a 5-0 lead after just 20 minutes. Kirsty Chambers capitalised on two defensive errors to net twice in quick succession before Jess Battle opened her account for the season, scoring a quick fire double despite the goalkeeper’s best efforts. United were firmly in control at New Mills.
Didsbury, who were promoted to the North West Women’s Regional League Division One South for this season, then showed a defensive resilience to stop last year’s Division One South champions enflicting any further damage to the scoreline; Jess Battle was denied a hat-trick by a good save before Sarah Chadwick’s attempt to round the goalkeeper was denied.
The Reds, who wore this season’s white away strip for the afternoon, went into the break 5-0 up with Luke Podmore using two of his three changes at the break. Corie Mather came on for her competitive FC debut, alongside Jess McCarrick as they replaced two of the goalscorers in Sarah Chadwick and Kirsty Chambers.
Despite being stopped from adding to the lead at the end of the first half, the impetus remained at the start of the second with Hannah Dale having an attempt saved on the stretch before Jess Battle rattled the bar from the resulting corner.
New signing Aimee O’Keeffe came off the bench for her FC debut on 59 minutes as Podmore’s third and final change, and within eight minutes the striker had her first goal for the club. Having delayed her run expertly, O’Keeffe was found by a smart ball from Rebecca Foster, the striker raced forward before finding the bottom corner for FC’s sixth of the game on 67 minutes.
The attacks didn’t stop there either, Hannah Dale fired over before Olivia Greenhalgh’s long range effort was parried away. Substitute Corie Mather then struck the base of the post after cutting inside from the left before Dale was again denied by the Didsbury goalkeeper.
They were to be the last opportunities of the tie, FC starting the season with a comfortable win and a place in the draw for the Second Qualifying Round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup. In that round they will go to Oughtibridge WMFC Ladies, on Sunday 23rd September with further details to be announced in due course. Before then, United will start their league campaign in their next game, with the visit of Fleetwood Town Wrens to Broadhurst Park, on Sunday 16th September.
