LEICESTER CITY FC INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY XI 4 FC UNITED of MANCHESTER YOUTH 1
FC United of Manchester’s Youth team travelled to Middlesex Road, Leicester on Monday afternoon and went down 1-4 against a skilful Leicester City FC International Academy XI, in a mid-season challenge match at the Leicester City FC training facility.

The contest was a lot closer than the final score line might suggest, but the well-drilled home side, comprising mainly of u17 players from Thailand, offered a quality of opposition that the FC United of Manchester Youth team rarely ever get to compete against.

After a keenly-contested opening period, a wayward goal kick from Tom Bamber saw the home side take full advantage and go ahead on 12 minutes, before FC United’s hopes of a possible equaliser from the penalty spot were dashed on 37 minutes when appeals for a foul on Sam Iwegbu were waved away.

Worse was to follow, when the Leicester City FC International Academy XI went 2-0 up on 41 minutes, after Jan Palinkas had conceded a penalty kick, which this time, was given.

And on the stroke of half-time, the home side continued to ride their luck, as FC United’s Dillon Kirkman saw a well flighted free-kick hit the Leicester cross-bar and rebound back into open play.

FC United eventually did get onto the score sheet on 63 minutes. Substitute Xavier Iwegbu was fouled in the eighteen yard box, and DILLON KIRKMAN sent the home ’keeper the wrong way from the penalty mark.

But any hopes of a recovery by the Young Reds were thwarted when Leicester added a third goal on 73 minutes, and their final goal, another penalty, scored in the second minute of time added on, was the icing on the cake.

FC United of Manchester Youth team certainly played well at times, and were unlucky that the final result wasn’t that little bit closer.
