FC United finish pre-season with Trafford victory
FC United finished the pre-season campaign with a 1-0 victory over Trafford in a match which was labelled the “Not The Frank Hannah Manchester Premier Cup Final???.

The two teams had made their way through the 2019/2020 competition and had been scheduled to meet in the final before the pandemic brought an abrupt ending to the campaign and left the competition without a final.

Both teams brought a competitive edge to the match up with the visitors starting brightly. Ollie Ford hit the bar and missed a great opportunity within the first 20 minutes.

The Reds weren’t on the backfoot though and had their own opportunities in the opening half, most notably when Charlie Ennis saw his placed effort bounce off the upright just before the break.

In the second half the chances kept coming for FC as they got on top of the game, forcing the Trafford defence to show their resilience on numerous occasions.

With the game looking like it was heading to penalties (to settle the Shocal Shield, which had been donated by the match sponsors), FC showed a bit of class and scored the only goal of the game.

Some good work down the left by Adam Dodd saw him move into the box, before pulling the ball back to Morgan Homson-Smith, who coolly placed the ball into the back of the net.

Homson-Smith’s goal capped off a good performance from the team as they now take a few days rest and training before welcoming Nantwich to Broadhurst Park a week on Saturday.

Website man of the match: Morgan Homson-Smith – looked lively and dangerous when coming on in the second half, showing glimpses of the form we saw towards the end of last season.
