FC UNITED of MANCHESTER YOUTH 3 CITY of LIVERPOOL YOUTH 4
FC United of Manchester Youth team’s latest pre-season fixture saw them host City of Liverpool Youth on the Broadhurst Park 3G on Friday afternoon in a close contest that saw the visitors going back home with a narrow 4-3 win.

CALLUM LONGSWORTH opened the scoring for the Purples on 24 minutes with a low shot past home keeper Drayke Holland before FAVOUR BOLAJI restored parity for the Young Reds on 38 minutes with a goal at the far post after being set up by Eli Kerrigan.

But there was still time for the visitors to edge back in front just before half time when Terence Lunt upended Jordan Monthe to concede an unnecessary penalty. MONTHE picked himself up to send Drayke Holland the wrong way from the 12 yard spot.

On 52 minutes, City of Liverpool went further in front, REECE SULLIVAN being allowed to turn 180 degrees inside the penalty box before steering the ball wide of substitute ’keeper Lenny Fieldhouse.

On 64 minutes, it was 1-4, as the FC United second half net-minder failed to adequately deal with a long range ALFIE CUNNINGHAM free kick.

There looked to be no way back for the Young Reds from there, but on 78 minutes, Jack Bennett set up OSMAN AGERSO to pull one back.

Then, on 80 minutes, Mason Beard curled in a floating cross from the left which JACK WARD headed home to make it 3-4 and set up a dramatic last ten minutes.

Although they couldn’t quite get that elusive equaliser, the FC United team will be heartened by what was a spirited partial comeback against their Merseyside opponents.
