Rampant Reds put six past Pontefract to progress in FA Cup

FC United are through to the second qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup after beating Pontefract Collieries 6-2 at Broadhurst Park on Tuesday night. The sensational Reds were 5-0 up after 35 minutes thanks to a brace from Charlie Ennis and goals from Regan Linney, Dan Cockerline and Michael Donohue. The West Yorkshire visitors rallied and pulled two back within six minutes of the second half but Aaron Morris made it 6-2 with four minutes to go in an entertaining encounter. The game certainly didn't start as it meant to go on as Pontefract came flying out of the traps and had the first chance inside 20 seconds as Dan Keane fired a shot that goalkeeper Dan Lavercombe beat away. That was it for Collieries in the first half as the Reds ran riot. On four minutes Adam Dodd ran down the left and crossed for Ennis to finish into the bottom corner. Six minutes later, the lead was doubled as a good move involving Donohue and Ennis ended with Linney side footing home. On 16 minutes it was 3-0 as Cockerline scored his first goal in FC colours when converted a Dodd cross. On the half hour it was four as Linney was tripped in the box. Ennis converting the spot-kick. Four minutes later it looked for all the world that Ennis had his hat-trick but he fired onto the post. The rebound found its way to Donohue who rolled the ball past the keeper. The second half started the same as the first with Pontefract on the attack and this time they took advantage as Nathan Modest ran clear and lobbed Lavercombe. On 51 minutes it was 5-2 as Keane curled the ball in at the far post. Ennis was still striving for his third and saw Michael Emery tip a shot away but the Reds did add to their total. On 81 minutes Aaron Morris opened his account for the season lobbing an exquisite volley over Emery after a quick Luke Griffiths free-kick. Website Man of the Match: Michael Donohue. An almost flawless performance. Report by Steven Wood
