Match Report
Carlos Roca missed a second half penalty and Dave Neville was sent off as FC United resumed their league campaign by slipping to a frustrating 1-0 defeat at North Ferriby on Tuesday night.

The hosts took the lead through Paul Foot inside the first two minutes and the Reds struggled to find a way back into the game. Roca was unlucky to hit the post with his spot-kick and Neville was shown his second yellow card late on to compound a miserable night on Humberside for United.

With United’s FA Cup run now just a memory it was hoped that the Reds could pick up their good run of form which had seen them undefeated in six matches before Saturday’s trip to Northwich. However, these hopes were dealt a blow less than two minutes into the game and United never recovered.

The home side pressed straight from the kick off and won a corner. The ball was whipped in and found the back of the net from a head. Paul Foot, the Ferriby defender and captain claimed the goal but it may have come off the head of Ben Deegan for an own goal.

The game continued at a brisk pace, Roca having a run which ended with a shot wide and Alex Davidson bringing an uncomfortable save from Sam Ashton. In fact, Davidson was proving to be a constant thorn in the FC side and he should have doubled the lead with a chance he created himself with a superb run but luckily for the Reds he finished horribly and fired the ball wide.

At the other end, Roca was seeing plenty of the ball and another mazy dribble brought him a chance but sadly he fired over. Deegan was also getting himself involved in the home box and was close with a diving header from a superb Phil Marsh free-kick but the ball just flew wide.
FC United came closest to the equaliser just before half-time when Deegan turned on the edge of the box and fired goalwards but the home keeper was alert to tip the ball over the bar.

The Reds started the second-half brightly with David Chadwick having a header saved and Adam Tong firing wildly over. On 54 minutes, United had the perfect opportunity to get back into the game when Marsh fell under a challenge in the box and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Roca stepped up confidently but hammered the ball onto the post.

The away team were having the lion’s share of possession but North Ferriby were looking dangerous on the break and Ashton was called into action, tipping another chance from Davidson past the post. In fact, the speedy Davidson should have clinched the game for Ferriby on 76 minutes when he ran clear yet again, only to shoot wide when he really should have scored.

The game ended with a scrambled chance for Chaddy cleared off the line and Dave Neville picking up his second yellow card of the game for a reckless challenge in the middle of the pitch.

Another frustrating night for FC United, despite having the majority of possession there wasn’t a lot of quality or chances, though there should be special mention for Ashton in the United goal and Ludovic Quistin who didn’t really put a foot wrong on his debut.
