Match Report
The FC United Youth in were in 7th Heaven today as they romped to a 7-0 win on the 3G pitch at Curzon Ashton. Goals from Josh Burke, Obied Elghreaw, Carl Fitton, Scott Cheetham, Matthew Tierney, Lee Hill and debutante Kane Joyce may have made their hosts wish that the two inches of snow that were on the pitch as recently as Wednesday, hadn’t cleared.

The reds started at a brisk pace with Matthew Tierney heading on to give Carl Fitton a clear run on goal with less than a minute only to pull his shot wide of both goal keeper and far post. The home side, seemingly with similar intent had their own chance just seconds later but Hayden Buckley Smith was able to make a comfortable save. Indeed the score could easily have been 2-2 within the first ten minutes.

The game did change in the 10th minute when, with Scott Cheetham the meat in a Curzon sandwich the home left back came off worst and left the field with a severe nosebleed. Five minutes later the first goal came. A break down the left saw the ball drift across to Scott Cheetham on the opposite flank. He calmly brought the ball under control and set up Josh Burke for a fierce drive from the edge of the penalty area.

From then on FC united took control of the game and had two good chances to add to the lead before doing so in the 25th minute. A cross to Tierney looked to be headed back across goal before being deflected out for a corner. The kick from Scott Cheetham appeared to be poor, struggling to reach the near post until Obied Elghreaw got to it before the defence and prodded it home. Almost Gianfranco Zola like in control turn and shot to those that didn’t actually see it. The move was almost repeated shortly afterwards but this time the Curzon defence managed to close him down.

The game did then settle down for quarter of an hour until two goals in as many minutes completed the first half scoring. Firstly Burke found Kane Joyce; who had been giving the Curzon defence a torrid time, on the right wing. His controlled ball in to Carl Fitton made it impossible to miss. Then a Ryan Lyons free kick from half way was headed on by Tierney to give Cheetham an equally easy finish.

Half time saw Luke Kolakowski replace Josh Burke who had taken a slight knock but little respite for the Curzon defence. Within five minutes it was 5-0 when an interchange of passes allowed Tierney to get his own name on the score sheet with a low drive into the far corner from all of 30 yards out. Shortly afterwards a Lyons free kick from the corner of the box drifted just over.

It was 6-0 just after the hour when Tierney got to the by line and crossed. This should have been dealt with by the Curzon keeper but his fumble was punished when Lee Hill, who had only been on the field for five minutes, reacted first and tapped home.

Chances to complete the scoring came and went until Jake Haslam and Tierney combined in the 85th minute to set up a chance for Kane Joyce. His shot was deflected past the Curzon keeper but it would be impossible to deny his impact the reward it deserved. Although there was no further score there were chances including some for Curzon as they belatedly sought a consolation goal.

This was a superb all round team performance, those not name checked for lack of space, performed their roles in a quiet efficient manner that would have had Denis Irwin aficionados in raptures.
