Match Report
FC United slumped to their fourth defeat of the season with a 2-0 loss at Chorley on Saturday afternoon as both sides finished with ten men and the Reds suffered injuries to Matthew Wolfenden, Kyle Jacobs and Steve Torpey.

United went behind six minutes before half-time through a Lee McEvilly penalty. Andrew Teague then doubled the Magpies’ lead two minutes after the restart and the Reds were not able to find a route back into the game.

There was a brief glimmer of hope when the hosts were reduced to ten men on 77 minutes with Steve Flitcroft receiving a straight red for a two footed lunge on Ben Deegan. However, United couldn’t make the man advantage count and in the dying minutes Deegan joined Flitcroft for an early bath after committing a second bookable offence.

With Carlos Roca unable to shake off a dead leg from Kendal and Wolfenden straining a hamstring in the warm up, United were far from their free flowing best.

They did have chances though, Adam Edwards had United’s best opportunity but put his one-on-one shot straight at goalkeeper Russell Saunders, whilst Nicky Platt hit the bar from the rebound and Daniel Grimshaw had a goalbound effort cleared midway through the second half.

Is was telling though that it took United 24 minutes to get a first effort on goal against the tightest defence in the Evo-Stik Premier Division and even then it was a header from Michael Norton which flew over the bar.

By that time, Chorley had had two good one-on-one chances to take the lead. United goalkeeper James Spencer tipped Tom Ince’s effort from the edge of the box over the bar after five minutes and on 17 minutes Simon Whaley was unlucky to see his lobbed effort go wide of the right post.

Two minutes after United’s first attempt on goal, the Reds registered their first shot on target. Edwards played a clever one-two with Norton on the right hand edge of the box to penetrate the Magpies’ defence but his sliding shot never really troubled Saunders.

On the half hour mark, captain Jacobs limped out of the action with a hamstring strain. Torpey suffered the same fate ten minutes into the second half. At this point, Richard Battersby moved to right back and Platt came off the bench and into midfield.

Eight minutes later, Chorley took the lead. The United defence scrambled a ball off the goal-line from a corner but they failed to clear their lines properly. Lee Neville appeared to go to make a challenge on the edge of the box but then pulled out. However, the fullback did make contact with Adam Roscoe and the forward hit the ground. Chorley’s man mountain McEvilly stepped up to coolly slot the ball to Spencer’s left to give the hosts the lead.

United responded within two minutes by creating their best chance of the game and you have to think had they got an equaliser before the break, the second half performance and result could have been very different.

Norton beat the off-side trap to go racing clear on the right hand side. He moved towards the box and drew Saunders over to his near post before squaring to Edwards who shot straight at the keeper. The rebound fell to Platt on the edge of the box and the midfielder steadied himself before lofting a ball over Saunders but agonisingly onto the bar. It was to be the last action of the first half.

The Magpies dealt the Reds the fatal blow within two minutes of the restart. A long ball into the box caught the United defence napping. McEvilly headed down to the completely unmarked Teague inside the six yard box at the right hand post where he tucked his shot away to give Spencer no chance, making it 2-0.

Torpey then had a speculative 40 yard effort tipped over the bar moments before he departed and Platt had a bicycle kick from the edge of the box well saved. United’s next roll of the dice was to throw Deegan and Grimshaw into the mix with Edwards the other player to make way.

Jake Cottrell also tried his luck with a 25 yard drive on 66 minutes but Saunders was equal to everything United were throwing at him. The only time in the afternoon that the keeper was beaten came one minute later. Grimshaw beat the offside trap and placed a side-footed effort round the keeper and towards goal but fullback Ali Brown was covering the line and confidently tapped the ball round the post.

Down at the other end, Spencer did well to keep the score down to 2-0 when he spread himself to thwart McEvilly who had muscled his way through the United defence.

All that was left was for tempers to flare, with a sending off for both sides and Saunders to make another couple of routine saves from a Deegan header and a long range strike by Michael Carr. The Reds must pick themselves up again in time for Wednesday’s visit of Nantwich and will anxiously wait to hear news on the fitness of Roca, Wolfenden, Torpey and Jacobs.
