Match Report
As part of a hectic opening week of the season the FC United Youth Team took a Tuesday evening stroll up to New Mills. They were met by an interesting choice of music emanating from the home dressing room. What they met on the pitch was a well organised home side that may well provide the stiffest test of the title defence.

The home side started brightly and had several chances in the first ten minutes with strike partnership Thomas Webb and Jordan Young proving a handful. FC’s first move of note came in the 12th minute when Kyle Cunningham moved forward and combined with Theo Kidd; the latter crossing across the face of the goal with New Mills hustling the ball out for a corner.

The contest then became a cut and thrust encounter with first Kane Joyce bursting into the box and the keeper diving at his feet. Then an exchange of passes on the right saw New Mills break into the box and force a smart save from Andrew Farrimond and a neat passing move that opened the home defence only to be halted by an offside flag. Both sides had further opportunities but the game reached half time with a blank score sheet.

The second half started in similar fashion although New Mills had the better possession. They deservedly took the lead on the hour with a penalty after full back Maximilian Thomas attempted to recover from losing possession. He looked to have got something on the ball but was judged to have caught the player as well.

This did, however galvanise FC and they gradually took over the game. They almost equalised two minutes later when Max found himself at the other end of the pitch firing in a sharp cross for Kane Joyce, whose shot was beaten away by the home keeper.

New Mills weren’t without threat as they were only just wide with a shot from a 70th minute corner. Theo Kidd fired narrowly wide when he found himself clear on goal after a defensive mix up.

The equaliser finally came in the 85th minute in possibly the best move of the match. A period of pass and move culminated in a low cross into the box that was fired home by Brian Totton.

FC United finished the game the stronger of the two sides but ran out of time in their quest for a winning goal. In truth though a draw was a fair result and if either of these teams wins the league by a point they are likely to consider this as the vital point won rather than two points lost.

FC United of Manchester: Andrew Farrimond, Maximilian Thomas, Jermaine Dre Metz, James Brooks, Kyle Cunningham, Asima Matibaro, Kane Joyce (Jonathan Poizer (68 mins), Thomas Minnock (Connor Naughton 74 mins) , Theo Kidd, Brian Totton, Matthew Hassall. Subs not used: Callum Rattigan, Nikeele Locke.
