Match Report
On a warm Sunday afternoon by the side of the Manchester Ship Canal the latest batch of young reds got their league title defence off to a winning start. North West Youth Alliance new boys Warrington Town were beaten 2-0 with free kick goals in either half.

The reds, all highly rated by manager Chuks Akuneto, started brightly, enjoying a good 70% of the early possession in the first five minutes. They had the ball in the net in the eighth minute as Theo Kidd slipped a neat pass to the overlapping full back Alex Stones, who slotted neatly into the far corner but was adjudged to have been offside.

Warrington took that let off as a cue to shake off the debut nerves and had some good pressure including a header hitting the bar from a corner. Warrington no9 James Anderson asked some awkward questions of the FC back line. His best effort forced a save from Andrew Farrimond but ultimately failed to threaten a goal.

The first goal came after 22 minutes when FC were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box after a strong run towards goal by Kane Joyce was blocked off unfairly. Matthew Boland stepped up to smash the ball into the top left corner of the net.

The home side continued to have good possession in midfield but it was always FC that looked more likely to score. A sweeping move from back to front saw Matthew thread a ball for Theo that deserved a finish but a splendid last ditch tackle saw the ball out for a corner. Favours were returned just before half time when it was Matthew’s turn to be thwarted at the last moment.

The second half started in a similar manner as FC sought to add to their lead with no success and Warrington threatened sporadically. The best of these being when Dylan Glass sprinted clear of James Brooks and into the area but Brooks recovered with an excellent tackle as Glass was preparing to shoot. As the half wore on FC United began to co control the game and were unlucky not to score when Theo crossed for Matthew, whose initial shot hit the bar but was wide with a rebound effort.

The second goal came with around 15 minutes remaining, left back Jermaine Dre Metz had broken forward when fouled some 25 yards out in line with the outside edge of the penalty area. The kick was a short pass to Thomas Minnock. His shot was perhaps more in hope than expectation as it found its way to the Warrington keeper, however a fumble of Massimo Taibi standard saw the ball wriggle into the net.

The visitors pressed for a third goal without success but it was the hosts that would consider themselves unfortunate not to score when a cross fizzed over and Jermaine, facing his own goal hooked clear to prevent the application of a finishing touch.

FC United of Manchester: Andrew Farrimond, Alex Stones, Jermaine Dre Metz, Kyle Cunningham, James Brooks, Asima Matabaro, Kane Joyce (Max Thomas 59 mins), Thomas Minnock (Callum Rattigan 82 mins), Theo Kidd, Matthew Boland, Luke Walker (Jonathan Poizer 51 mins). Subs not used Dominic Murphy and Connor Naughton.

Goals: Matthew Boland (22 mins) and Thomas Minnock (74 mins).
