Match Report
A first half goal from Daniel Grimshaw and a late Astley Mulholland penalty gave FC United a 2-0 away win over Burscough on Wednesday night, setting up a trip to Chorley in the next round of the Doodson Sports Cup.

It was a good win for United but one which also saw a bizarre sending off with Lee Neville being given a straight red for throwing mud at one of his opponents in retaliation after being fouled.

FC United had an appeal for handball in the area turned down on six minutes and Ben Whitcombe fired over for the home side on just over 15 minutes later.

Just after the half hour mark, a flowing FC move involving a superb one-two between Carlos Roca and  Neville saw Rocas goalbound shot blocked.

The Reds took the lead five minutes later when another good move, this time down the right wing saw the ball worked into the box where it found Daniel Grimshaw who took a touch and rifled the ball into the net.

The lead was almost doubled five minutes later, when another great passage of football saw Matthew Wolfenden through, he played the ball back to Jake Cottrell, who saw his shot blocked.

The game exploded into life shortly before half-time, when Neville was caught by Conor Roberts on the touchline. Both players came together with other players getting involved.

When calm had been restored, the referee decided to give Roberts just a caution for the tackle but to send off Neville for apparently throwing mud at his opponent.

The Linnets started the second half much brighter and a good move involving Paul Williams and Will Jones saw James Spencer pull off a good save.

On 56 minutes, Roberts was involved again, when his shot was deflected over Spencer and onto the crossbar and away.

It took to the 77th minute for the next FC chance, Kyle Jacobs firing in a long range shot that was well tipped wide by Connor Roberts (the keeper, not to be mistaken for the outfield player with the same name).

The game seemed to be petering out but came to life in the last couple of minutes. Firstly, Astley Mulholland picked up a clearance in his own half and ran the full length of the Burscough half before firing into the side netting.

Then, as the game entered stoppage time, The Linnets almost picked up and equaliser when Williams fired a shot at goal that Spencer did well to tip wide.

The game was wrapped up a minute later, when Mulholland was pulled down in the box. He took the penalty himself and sent Roberts the wrong way to seal the victory.

It was a decent run out for the team, the selection showing that there is an intention to progress in the competition.

Website man of the match: Dean Stott - yet another composed performance in midfield from Stott. He does the simple things well, breaks up the play and uses the ball intelligently.
