Match Report
In your childhood you took it as read that FA cup finals would be played in blistering sunshine. This particular game was Moston Juniors against FC United of Manchester for the County FA Under 18 competition, but on Thursday night at Moor Lane, Salford it was absolutely true. It even provided a late team change as Jonathan Beisty started in place of Andrew Farrimond. And for readers with long memories the added coincidence of an opposition with red in the stripe of their kit.

FC started brightly, a Josh Smethurst free kick was headed wide in the first minute. In the next attack, Sam Howell broke down the left wing and drove a cross into the box that was met by Theo Kidd, his shot looked to be going wide but was cleared for a corner; from which, Josh Smethurst crossed for Richard Smith to head home.

With several missed chances the lads looked keen to rack up a large score and although not before Beisty was called into action, made it 2-0 after 18 minutes. Another Smethurst cross into the box was pushed out but only as far as Matthew Boland who drove low into the corner from 20 yards.

Perhaps the heat was proving too much but the FC boys slowed the game down for the rest of the first half. This allowed Moston back into the game. They scored on 36 minutes when a clearance kick was intercepted giving the scorer an empty net to fire into. Shortly afterward they were unlucky not to be level with a neat move as a free kick was lifted over the FC wall to give their runner a free shot. Fortunately for FC it went wide.

Moston went in at half time feeling they had every chance of getting something from the game, but the second half action quickly proved them wrong as FC dominated throughout. It wasn’t until the 58th minute that the goals started coming. In a short corner routine Josh Smethurst passed to Sam Howell who went towards the goal line before pulling the ball back to Matthew Boland. He took a second to assess the options in a seemingly packed penalty area before deciding to shoot over the top of them. His effort hit the underside of the bar and dropped in. Josh and Sam combined again two minutes later, this time a deeper cross was volleyed home by Jonathan Poizer.

Moston Juniors then saw perhaps their last hope disappear with a red card for a second bookable offence. The referee was in no doubt even if it did look harsh from the FC bench. Whilst clearly disappointed by the decision the Moston players chose not to share the over-reaction of the Moston bench.

It was 5-1 on 71 minutes when a Smethurst pass, seemingly intended for Connor Naughton over ran and reached Theo Kidd. He then decided to run around thirty yards into the box and fire home. That the sixth goal took a further fifteen minutes to arrive was not from a lack of effort from all the outfield players, Connor Naughton, Alex Stones and Jonathan Poizer being particularly unlucky; Captain and Managers player of the year James Brooks embarked on several of his trademark charges at the opposition defence without success.

Goals six and seven came in the last five minutes as first Luke Walker volleyed home as Theo, Matty Boland and Andy Lee caused problems for the Moston defence, Andy’s shot being deflected to Luke. Theo helped himself to his second picking up a loose ball on the edge of the Moston Box before shooting in.

There was still time for Moston to attempt perhaps the most audacious effort of the night with a lob from near the half way line that cleared the bar and the game ended with handshakes all round, FC victorious and another trophy to be collected.

This was a splendid all round team effort and for anyone not name checked above; it is only the lack of space to praise everyone. With Jonathan Beisty, Kial Callacher, Andy Lee Jonathan Poizer and Josh Smethurst young enough to come back next season, there seems no reason not to hope for more of the same. To the others your correspondent offers heartfelt thanks for the season just gone and the expectation that you will be wearing a first team shirt in the future.
