Match Report
A brilliant individual effort by Matthew Wolfenden and an opportunistic pounce by Michael Norton saw FC United win 2-0 at Buxton on Saturday afternoon with two second half goals.

In a classic game of two halves, it was the Reds who managed to score when in control, rounding off 2013 with a valuable three points and moving up to fourth place in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

Picking themselves up from Boxing Day’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Ashton United, FC made a couple of changes to the starting XI, bringing in Greg Daniels and Astley Mulholland as Joe Fox and Tom Greaves dropped to the bench in the sun-smothered backdrop of the High Peak.

FC United were having to deal with Buxton’s advances from the outset; the home side having the wind direction in their favour. The Reds defence was at full stretch from a barrage of set pieces throughout the half with the home side first to every ball as United found it difficult to establish a foot hold in the game.

Mulholland, looking the best outlet option for the visitors, burst down the left squaring to Callum Byrne who forced a fine save from Andy Warrington in what was to prove United’s only real chance of the half.

Craig King was proving a particular highlight for the Bucks, causing problems down the left side and almost setting up Lee Morris, poking the ball through to the striker who turned and shot a low drive from the edge of the area which tested on loan goalkeeper Ed Wilczynski.

United’s young keeper was in action again five minutes later with an excellent tip over the bar to deny the home side. The resultant corner was cleared and the Reds almost threatened. Mulholland found Mike Norton and as play opened up for the United striker to shoot, the ball bobbled on the uneven pitch and the effort failed to trouble Andy Warrington.

A golden chance came for the Bucks minutes before half time as the ball came back out to Derek Niven who saw Wilczynski off his line and attempted to lob the United keeper. Luckily for the visitors, Niven’s effort rolled wide of the net. Matt Thornhill was next to try to break the deadlock for Buxton, running into a one-on-one position with Wilczynski who came off his line to close down the player and win the ball.

The Reds did well to go in at the break without having conceded, considering that their opponents had controlled the majority of the first half. Whilst both teams were contending with a poor playing surface, FC were struggling to string passes together and showing no real signs of troubling Buxton.

Marginson’s side straight-away looked improved as the second half began and were ahead on 51 minutes. Matthew Wolfenden received the ball from Dave Birch, controlled it before going on a tricky run inside the box, evaded defensive tackles and shot past Warrington from around 12 yards.

At the opposite end of the park, Morris was testing Wilczynski who made a point-blank save at his left-hand post from extremely close range. The United keeper then claimed an assist as the Reds doubled their advantage. Directed by the bench, Wilczynski picked out Norton with a diagonal cross field ball from a free-kick. Norton came in on the blind side of the defender who let the ball bounce, giving the striker room to round Warrington, who’d gone to ground, and bundle the ball home.

Two goals two minutes apart put FC firmly on the front foot; however Daniels could do no more for United, coming off injured and being replaced by Fox just short of the hour mark. Not long after, the home side made their final change, bringing on the prolific Mark Reed who has scored 240 goals during his time with the Bucks. Morris made way.

In a reversal of the first half, FC United were looking a lot more comfortable and retaining possession well, whilst Buxton were now struggling to keep hold of the ball. The United management opted to bring on two different attacking options within three minutes of each other. Both goal-scorers were replaced and Tom Greaves and Matthew Walwyn were introduced.

Buxton began to step up their game late in the half and a mistake from Wilczynski under pressure from Reed almost allowed the Bucks back in. Wilczynski’s goal kick ricocheted off Reed in the six-yard box and the keeper had to quickly back track to prevent an inadvertent goal. Despite Buxton claims that the ball had crossed the line, Wilczynski’s clean sheet remained intact.

The Bucks continued to press into added time but it proved too little too late as United came away from Silverlands with a valuable victory. Had Buxton managed to profit from their upperhand in the first half, the story may have been different, however a much stronger second period for the Reds saw them end the year on a high.
