Reserves & Youth - last weekend's action

Cheshire Association Football League - Division Two

FC United Reserves 3 (Mike 7, Stockdale 12, Rothwell 53) v Warrington Town Reserves 1 (Ellis 40)

23/2/08 - 2.15pm @ The Abbey Stadium, Gorton, Manchester

An inspired opening 20 minutes left Warrington with a mountain to climb after Renee Mike opened his goalscoring account for the season with a seventh minute strike. Dom Stockdale headed a second five minutes later after a fine flowing move. Things appeared bleak for Town when Brownbill was sent off for a cynical foul as the last man but the visitors managed to pull a goal back just before half time after a long range from Owen Ellis effort was fumbled by Tompos.

Warrington pushed hard for an equaliser in the early exchanges but the extra man began to tell and Jimmy Rothwell burst through and finished coolly for United taking advantage of some tired legs among the Warrington defence.

Matt Hampson was awarded his fifth man of the match of the season and his second in consecutive games after running the midfield with Jamie Rother. Renee Mike, Dom Stockdale and Mike Sacks also performed very well.

Didn’t We Have A Lovely Time The Day We Went To Morecambe?

Sunday 24th February 2008 may have seemed to be a day of rest to most of you, especially given the current hectic fixture schedule.

However, for our gallant youth team it meant the longest trip of the season. They were required to play away at Morecambe in the North West Youth Alliance Premier Division.

Luckily some of our more intrepid travellers saw to it that they weren’t without encouragement. Gathering in Stephenson’s Square, both team and fans boarded a bus and headed for Morecambe and Lancaster College.

On arrival the team got off the bus to get changed. Our intrepid travellers, on learning that the game was actually to be played on a 3G pitch at Heysham High School did what they do best and embarked on a search for the pitch. Fortunately the team had an escort from their opponents.

The first half of the match was an evenly contested affair with few chances. The best of these being when Liam James took a quick free kick whilst the opposition defence was organising itself and contrived to put it wide of the post. Morecambe opened the scoring in the 43rd minute when their number nine Lloyd Triplett took advantage of defensive uncertainty.

"You’ll wished you had never scored"?? trilled our intrepid travellers, to the desired effect when Matthew Kirkwood equalised straight from a corner two minutes later.

The second half was fast and frenetic, the ball travelling quickly from end to end. Sadly Morecambe were the only side to add to the score with Leon Harrison on 72 minutes and Lloyd Triplett on 74 minutes punishing defensive lapses to make the final score Morecambe 3 FC United 1.

On the journey home the intrepid travellers thanked the team for their efforts. FC man of the match Nick Swirad received a box of chocolates. Why the DVD of "Gregory’s Girl"?? given to Shaun "Wes Brown"?? Williams seemed strangely appropriate will remain a secret.
