Easter Sunday win for Youth team against Prescot Cables

The sun shone brightly as FC United of Manchester’s Youth Team brought the curtain down on their home league programme at St Bride’s with a 4-2 Easter Sunday win against Prescot Cables. The game started with a keen midfield contest with Prescot having more possession than the reds, although neither side created a genuine opening in the first fifteen minutes. Indeed FC opened the scoring with the first of them when Jamie Mack, faced with an acute angle chipped the ball delicately over the keeper and into the net.

For the next twenty minutes the home side dominated possession and looked the more likely to add to the score although the only worthwhile chance came from an Ashley Reece free kick from half way which met the head of Toby Iloba and forced a fine save from Phil Hunt in the Prescot goal.

As half time approached, Prescot began to get a foothold in the game and equalised when a cross from Matthew Smith was headed home by Ryan Barness. That was the last action of the first half which finished 1-1.

Stunned by that strike FC were slow to start the second half with Prescot looking more likely to take the lead. Fortunately they failed to do so and in the 59th minute a long throw from the left was deflected in by the head of Toby Iloba at the near post for a goal that saw FC take charge of the game. Shortly afterwards it was 3-1 when Jamie Mack outpaced the Prescot defence to run on top a fine long ball. Rather than squaring the ball to give John Buckley a tap in the predator’s instinct took over and his shot was saved. Fortunately the rebound broke to debutante Callum Gardner who returned it with interest.

Many watching thought that would be game over until Prescot took advantage of a defensive lapse to score what seemed to be the easiest goal of the day. The two goal cushion was restored shortly afterwards as Mack outmuscled the Prescot defence in the corner of the area and fired across the keeper and into the far corner of the goal to complete the scoring.
